Not much has happened on the M3 or the Ford in the last few months, just going along with the usual job of a car. We also went on summer holiday for a few weeks, so had the cars washed, waxed and packed away.

Got back last week and met up my buddies for coffee one evening

Still on the look out though for wheels and the plan for bearings is on for December.

Very humid evening, so we tried to stay within AC, but had much fun 'cruising' around the town!

Happy New Year to all...

New year, new bearings!!!

I guess, it was about time and happy that it is done at present as the way they look, the inevitable was near.

New ones going in...

Car is still with mechanic as once the bearings are installed, he will be installing the new coils and spark plugs as well as going through the entire car and giving my a breakdown of what will likely be replaced next and over the next 6 months in terms of wear priority.

Cannot wait to get the car back and run in...

82 310km done on the bearings. I bought the car a year ago with 75 xxxkm and since i owned it, its had 2 oil changes.
Previous owner was an enthusiast so i can assume that oil changes and proper warm up / cool down procedures were done. I cannot guarantee it though, dont know them that well.

Great catch!

I've been told (by one gentleman living in the UAE) that the cars in the UAE aren't having bearing issues as the fuel quality is superior. I don't claim to know any better, but are the cars in the UAE experiencing premature bearing wear as well from your short time there in the car scene?

From the looks of the bearing wear on yours, it is the same as South Africa. Change bearings every 80k-100k km and enjoy peace of mind.

The car is looking great, enjoy it!

Thanks man!

I was also told the same and while at the back of my mind the bearings always bothered me since i got the car, i was slightly comforted by the claim of "better fuel" and "higher temps" meant the oil stayed warm longer, etc. But, then you hear rumors that the 98 fuel is not actually 98 and such which added more doubt so i just got them changed anyway. Piece of mind more over anything else...

I just wish BMW would own up and do recalls instead of this costing the user. Or even part pay, perhaps supply parts or something... Anyways, its done - Will hopefully get a chance to collect the car early next week if not sooner. Just want to run in and then book a track day or two to enjoy the car.

Requested some additional coding done to the car. Small things like:
- Convertible open/close while car is in motion - Set the speed to 20km/h. Its so annoying that the car has to be stationary to open/close the roof.

- 120km/h speed warning remove. I dont mind the beep but the red "LIMIT" sign stays on and then i cannot see the V speed on the cluster

- For some odd reason, my car did not come with the M button on the steering, its got a Diamond logo on that button, and i cannot set it in the idrive to be the M button. I have to go manually into the idrive to put it in M mode. Mech says he will code that button to be the M button. Want to order the M button and start/stop buttons soon. Not sure which color to go. Red feels rite!

Red definitely feels right! I also want to order a red button to give it the feel of the newer M cars.

Update...

Picked up the car on Tuesday from Octane and Shak advised that all is good on the overall wear and tear items and the only item to really worry about is the steering rack which has a slight leak. The reason the car was with Octane for more than 4 days was to monitor the severity of this leak and it was very minimal. However, i have ordered the item and will send the car back once the parts arrive to have it replaced.

As you saw above, the bearings did not look too happy although no issues reported thankfully! Shak did advise that it was good timing, so im glad to have this ticked off the list.

Running in the bearings, keeping it low RPM as much as possible. Once the 1000km are done, will probably do an oil change and then increase the rpm gradually for the next 1000km. Not necessary but just for my own peace of mind.

At the same time, i had Shak replace the coils and sparks as well and what a huge difference, the car feels much more smoother, even the exhaust note changed.

While the weather is cool here, i want to get the car through its paces as much as i can, booking a track day for end of Feb at Yas Marina Circuit.

Awesome stuff Arbee!
Absolutely love this car still. You may just have to bring it back with you if you ever return! Haha.
