335i overheating with no warning

Hi guys,

Was off to work this morning traveling at 70km/h to avoid trapping when after 4km cooling fan activates at high speed- no warning signs on dash etc. Drive 50m and the car goes into limp mode but still no warning notices on system and temp gauge normal. A few seconds later amber then red engine overheating notice and warning not to open bonnet due to scalding risk. Waited 39 min after calling tow truck and saw signs of coolant escaping the expansion bottle. Opened cap of expansion bottle and plastic level moves higher than low level so enough coolant in system?
Car went for oil service a week ago at SMG Tygervalley and was running well. Dropped off at SMG for investigation on Tuesday. Have any of you had similar experiences? Thermostat or water pump possible failure and do you th8nk that I could have damaged the engine?

Had this car from new in 2007 and fanatical about maintenance. Oil change either 10000km or 1 year, changed all engine and suspension mountings as preventative maintenance, only serviced at BMW with PPK1 kit, down pipe and charge pipe- 132000km. Car is a dream with no oil consumption between services etc.

Appreciate your feedback

Thanks, realize that the temp gauge is oil temp and not coolant temp so that is why I did not see any significant movement. My concern is potential engine damage

Hi guys update on my car.
Walter at SMG and his team are heroes! Diagnostics indicated water pump and thermostat needed changing. Did so, leak and pressure tested and all good!
Drove the car yesterday with temp readings from the hidden menu and consistently between 84-103 C. Going to treat this original manual N54 gem as a project car and do proactive maintenance!
Eddie from parts at SMG Tygervalley is amazing and always helps out. Would not take my car elsewhere in CT

Get in touch Zee , the RENNZPORT CT agent and slap in an oil Thermo cooler valve if he still had stock. It’s under 1k and makes a proper difference to oil temps as well.
