2022 M240i vs the past M2 greats...

Some data from Mark Jones, Citizen Motoring. Tested at the Highveld at Gerotek, which makes me wonder if the M240i could crack an even better time at sea level...

M240i is pretty quick, especially at this price point. Though, journos say it lacks real emotion. Would be keen to drive one and find out for myself.

Without a doubt, the new M240i is a performance bargain. (who pays 1.2M these days for a "performance bargain")

Have driven one and can confirm, it's blistering quick in a straight line. Back-end tends to step out, but nothing like an M2 Comp. Unfortunately it's permanent x-Drive and not M x-Drive.

Officially gassed posted a video a few days ago - M240i vs. 8Y RS3. M240i has exhaust, intake and JB4. RS3 has intake and tuning box. Ultimately the M240i was the quicker car on the day.

Have to admit - I trust the testing Mark does and the highveld conditions. But he is the first journalist i've seen that hasn't cracked the sub 3sec bracket (0-100) with the new M240i.

I am not intending this to sound the way it probably does. But in this world of stupid pricing “at least” the M240i (and M340i) are at least faster considering they cost more than the prior gen M cars they are compared to (if they makes sense?)

X drive and Autobox is fine on the SUVs and big cars. I feel like the small ones will be robbed of too much feel.

Keen to see what price the M2 comes in at. I would also sooner believe Mark Jones for his consistency in method, location and “independence” vs many other journalists.

R1.2m for an equipped M240i, sure it's super fast but that is, by any measure, a thick chunk of change.

M2 will be R1.5m+? That's what the F M3/4 cars *CLOSED OUT* their cycle costing. Inflation is real kids!

New car prices are beyond comprehension. The fact that a M240i costs 1.2 bar is just...madness. New M2 and M240 now properly out of reach for most.

As somebody entering the new car market for the first time - it does hurt.

There's also a "narrowing" of the market. We had a long chat about this when the M4 launched and it's price was on top of a new 911. Now it's looking like the new M2 will launch deep in Cayman pricing territory. Essentially BMW pricing itself alongside Porsche across their sportscars.

As a consumer it gets really hard to justify - the previous M2 was a fantastic car. But when you're north of R1m the expectations for interior quality, specialness etc. start ramping up heavily. Look at how many M2s are on the road? It's cool, sure, but it's not special or rare and the interior quality is, essentially, equal to a 116i.

Even now, looking at the new model M240i - I can't help but not get excited by the interior, the idea that it's sacrificing drive feel for 0-100 times and making the entire car a more anodyne experience.

Isn't the whole point of BMW, and certainly of a R1m+ BMW, to get something you *want* to drive because it feels good to do so? Is a 4s 0-100 really that exciting? The first 10 times, yeah, but honestly, after that you'll be bored and want a 3.5s, or a 3s and after all of that some dude in an EV in 10yrs time will do a 1.8s 0-100 and embarrass... This really is the last generation of pure petrol engined cars, at least buy ones that are interesting.

He doesn't use any sort of launch assistance (meaning either launch control or brake boosting) which is why his times are consistently slower than other journos achieve.
