New update.

Project back at square 1; Reason: Radiator drain plug and sleeve went missing this morning on the highway.

So, new radiator as the sleeve and plug cost about R1800 from BMW and no one seems to keep these parts readily available here in Jhb.

After doing my own service this past weekend I’m told that I need to re-do the oil and filter as I burnt oil after losing the drain plug this morning, so this has set me back R4500 for the new radiator, coolant, oil and filter.

Starting to think this car is just throwing signs at me to forget the Turbo Kit 😂 because if it’s doing this stock, I can only imagine what it will do when it’s got a Turbo putting more strain on it.

So back to the drawing board, I think I might scrap this idea in general and wait till I have a second car to daily drive before getting anymore brilliant ideas 😅

N55 swap anyone 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

General rule of thumb. The words "little money" or "budget not allowing it" does not pair with boosting a car.

If you want 335i power - You buy a 335i
If you buy a 335i and complain about tuning cost but you want it faster - Sorry, but you bought the wrong car in the first place. If you can't afford a tune you can't afford a high performance car.

This is not aimed directly at you, it's reality in general.

You have a '20i, take whatever money you wanna throw at it and save up for a new car keeping the general rule of thumb in mind...

@Teezoh no I agree 💯 with you man, I complain about the funds because this car currently is just chowing money out my pocket, with what I’ve spent on buying and repairing I might as well have bought a 335i, but so is life, so I thought why not just build it, but I’ve realised that I’m going to need a second car to go ahead if I do this project, because I’m not just doing a straight engine swap, if I’m doing this I’m going to do it properly.

Here's my honest, no BS input.

If the car is costing you too much money to maintain, why are you holding onto it? The math is just not math'ing here.

A '20i should be a great daily, besides cosmetic upgrades maybe to make her look good, your maint cost should just be normal with a nice consistent fuel consumption.

As with many things in life, you need a balanced relationship. It can't be one sided. If you're throwing money at something, be it a car or a woman, and you're not happy you need to ask yourself why? Both of them can look great with cash going towards cosmetic upgrades but you can't expect a '20i to keep up with a 335i purely because you slapped a wing on it, they both have limits, much like a woman with a new rack not just turning into a p0rnstar. Both examples have common sense attached to it.

You need to know and understand the limits to things in life, what you put in is what you get out (and yes this applies to both examples).

If you do your part, maintain it, look after it, spend time with it. It should return the favour, if not just retrace the flow and see where things are not balancing.

Some of us settle for daily drivers, some of us settle for slightly boosted ones while others settle for mint competition packs, none of them are wrong by any means since none of us as humans are alike. All of us however have a need for happiness. It's up to you however to find yours.

I'm by no means a qualified councillor or match maker, but it's clear that you're not happy. Retrace the flow and figure out where it's coming from, if it's time to part ways just except it, don't fight it. You've spent 100k+ on her by now, don't let our next generation quote me in 10 years when you've done the turbo conversion and all the fancy bits you wanted but you're still not happy coz she's costing you xyz...

PS... Yes, I believe I triggered your hormones here @M3boi , @TBP88 , @modocrat , @Sabretooth tiger , @AshG108 . Sorry, not sorry :ROFLMAO:

@Teezoh thanks man, I do hear where you coming from, so the issue with this car is actually more the fact that I bought a lemon man, I mean yes from day one I should’ve just said F*#k it taken the car back and looked for another Bimmer, but being my first car I didn’t really know what I was getting into, so yeah it’s been one thing on another, but as much money as it has taken from me I am still proud enough to say that I’ve invested the time into trying to get her back to being the way she should even if it has been rather pointless, it’s really just been a learning curve for me. So not as an excuse but sometimes I worry about buying a 2nd hand 335i because of what I’ve gone through with this car man.

You don't need to worry about buying new/used cars with the community you have at hand bro.

Most of us will gladly help you look for something, we have okes on here that can spot a pimple on a bum on a pixelated beach gathering photo. If not that there's a ton of us that go look at cars in person too.

There's nothing wrong with a build idea, don't get me wrong, but builds require a HUGE investment of money and time. Keep in mind that if you do performance upgrades, you need to do brakes/suspension too. It just goes on and on, trust me.

Get your cabbie sorted out as a daily, where she gets you from point a to b without any problems. Drop the next 100k+ into your next car when you're ready and remember to ask everyone to help you find something worth it.

Good morning my fellow fanatics.

So for the past year I was driving around with a water pump that was pumping 😅😂

How the new engine survived the onslaught is pure luck, but on a positive note she seems to be running quite well now, the smoking also stopped, could this have been something related to the water pump?

So now the last few fixes are just oil leaks, one of them being from the VANOS sensors, should I replace the sensors themselves or just clean them up and re-do the seals on them?

Thanks in advance.

Oh and finally did my first Second gear wheel spin in her last night 😅 not so boring after all @Teezoh definitely a good daily 👍🏻

I would hope so...

But from reading the rest it seem there was no pumping.

How one does not realise there is no pumping going on baffles me. She must have made it clear that you're going but nothing is pumping somehow? For one year? Riding her dry? fml...

definitely a good daily
We're getting somewhere now, proud of you!

@Teezoh yes I meant wasn’t pumping 😅🤦🏻‍♂️

Yeah should’ve seen the signs sooner, but thought 100•c was more or less operating temp. 🤣

But the smoking did come back so yeah seems like VSS is still an issue 🤷🏻‍♂️

But definitely driving much better now.

What issues does the car still have?

I'm convinced OP is driving a Tractor somewhere in the vast Kalahari with a Black Label quart held firmly between his vellies smoking a zol through the ass of a pofadder coz no E90 I know of can still ride after one year without a water pump that's not pumping and not overheat or break.

If so, Buffelsfontein should please contact him coz you won't get a rowwer blixem to use for an add than that.

At least the "spins in second gear" problem/achievement is now sorted :ROFLMAO:

I've read so many different operating temps for these cars - even that you can alter the settings to run cool, warm or hot.

I think some of it has to do with what temp the thermostat opens but also what temp the fan kicks in.
Mine runs up to 105 before the fan kicks in but it seldom gets there, average is 103 and the pump is definitely working.

I think had your pump not been working the engine would have overheated so that doesn't make sense.

Some claim the engine is more efficient at hotter temps but I can't find any empirical evidence this is true.
