Family member wants to buy this car. Has just over 100k on the odo. I advised him against it as it has a petrol engine and an Asian gearbox. Was i giving him wrong advice???

Not really, the B48 is generally reliable with the usual BMW issues, coolant leaks, OFHG etc.

The main issue the B48 faces is the service intervals, if said car had services every 15k kms...it should be fine, if it was every 25k kms...best to walk away.

The diesel variant in this platform isnt much better...especially with the fuel leak issue that can nuke the wiring if not caught early.

And there i was, thinking an Aisin box is Asian. Thanks for the info. Does the oil filter housing gasket still leak on the B48? Have they not fixed the problem yet?? Been leaking since the E46's and before. What about timing chain issues and valve stems oil seals leaking? Is that still a problem.

The B48 only came out around 2015 with the facelift F30

My 2c....

If a family member is asking about a particular car over 100,000km (in my experience), it means that they are asking for a car that will give them Zero hassles. If something goes wrong (even if low chance), they are going to blame you for giving wrong advice.

I would steer them to a Japanese brand, unless the previous owner of the German car kept meticulous records of every maintenance (and preemptive maintenance) item.

i think they are a worthwhile buy .

I have never heard any major faults with the Aisin gearbox. Like all gearboxes , they need their oil service.

Then the B48 again as with all other engines just needs regular services, and just ask his mechanic keep to keep an eye out on their potential parts that could fail like the cooling pipes etc.
