A truck bumped my dad yesterday and luckily it was mostly minor damage, it's a 2020 M340i in Dravit Grey which my dad has taken exceptional care off

I'm looking for the absolute best repair shop who can get the car back to OEM (I'm talking panel gaps, paint, paint thickness, everything basically)

Attached below is the damage, luckily it's just cosmetic so my dad was able to drive it home

Got a lot of positive reviews on Sandton ARC. Dealers mentioned they were 1 of the only places to get Dravit grey right. suppose It's a very difficult colour to match as it changes depending on the angle you look at it.

Had a decent experience at Sandton ARC so I’d give them a +1

Update on this! The car has been at BMW Sandton ARC for the past two months. They told me the car is ready, so I went to have a look at it before signing for it. I was nothing short of disappointed, so I left it there and told them to get it perfect. You would expect better service after R150k and almost 2 months. 1 thing's for sure, these guys are wacking insurance companies (150k for a rear bumper/fender and a respray???)

See below:

The sideskirt and rear fender don't align properly, and neither does the rear bumper.

bottom rear panel side skirt.jpeg

there's overspray on the roof, they said they didn't notice it until we took it out in the sun

overspray on top.jpeg

They burnt 1 of the mirror caps by trying to polish it so now they have to respray both

burnt through paint.jpeg

The worst part. They managed to scratch the car on the front left bonnet, I'm almost 99% there was no scrathes when the car was handed over

Probably the only thing they did a good job on was the paint matching/blending. will have to micro test that as well when it goes in for another detail and Ceramic coating.

Damn sorry bud.

Finding a good panel shop in general is rare these days and expecting a BMW ARC to be on par is no longer a given unfortunately.

Hope they rectify all of the above without causing any further damage.

If I know my dad, The car will be sitting till the end of the year if it's not perfect lol.

The manager and head of QC were nice enough to go through everything and agreed on everything I was saying so Hopefully they sort it out properly this time.

Outcome was exactly what i expected.

BMW approved <> THE best.

You want a shop that deals in exotics where the owners can afford to sue the living hell out of the shop if they mess up their car. I suspect this is gonna be back and forth a bit more than you want.

100%.

This is why my cars go to Tier One. They are the panelshop of choice for Fouche and Daytona. Comes at a premium but their work is second to none.

Any recommendations on guys that can align panel gaps 100%
Few shops that do the quality work you want done would accept to fix someones "hack" job.

I would assume the fender was cut out and a new panel welded in. Is that panel correctly aligned? if not then it's cut and replace again. See the rabbit hole you end up going down? Sandton ARC has a right for them to remedy the situation so you can't simply have it sent somewhere else to get it fixed. For that you will need your insurances involvement.

Eish, the only reason we went with them was so that the Motorplan stays intact. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it!

Hopefull for the best, let's see what they say this week.

If the car is on BMW finance and the condition is BMW ARC, then if the ARC doesn't repair to standard it is not on you. They deal with it amongst themselves. I've got experience with both Sandton and ABS in Midrand, the Midrand ones do the work better for sure.

Car is all paid up but the main reason we went with an ARC was because my dad extended the Motor Plan. And they would've cancelled the plan if we didn't use them.

The first lesson is QC shouldn’t be picking things up. I’ve had complicated colours like carbon black metallic perfectly matched at Sandton ARC, but they polished the shit out of the front fender point where it meets the light and then tried to tell me “it’s fine”.

The real issue is not having a shit job done the first time and then they agree to your snag list and fix. The guys who stripped this car the first time and put it back together thought it was acceptable and so did QC until you complained. Now you have the same guys take it apart again and put it back.

It’s a bit like sending the steak back because it’s not medium. You don’t know what happens thereafter till it comes back.

You’re also stuck in the machine of them fixing it, calling you to check it, and hoping you say it’s okay. They also have an acceptable level of quality that the car will leave the ARC with. It’s not always possible to align everything perfectly. The ARC knows this and they might try but certain imperfections are within the realm of acceptable and that’s the main issue of contention. If you are under the impression that they will keep the car there till year end to fix things until you’re happy, you don’t know how BMW ARCs operate.

I’ve found that talking to the workshop foreman and making your expectations clear has the best outcome for you. Dravit grey isn’t that hard to colour match versus many other individual BMW colours. Panel gaps should be as close to BMW factory spec as they can manage. Overspray is just unacceptable. Don’t tolerate that nonsense. They should have taken the car into the sun to inspect the car before they called you to collect it.

It’s possible that spray is from another car that wafted through the booth when it was open or any number of reasons but that should be sorted out.

Before they call you again to collect the car. Call and ask for the foreman, or better still buy him a coffee and take it there to wynberg, explain the situation and that you’re not rushing for the car, but it also can’t stay there for ever. Make your concerns heard and let the guy take his coffee and go do his job.

Ultimately if it comes back kak the second time, you can throw all the toys out of the cot and fly into a dizzy rage since you treated the guy like a human and allowed him the chance to do it properly. And if it comes back 100 on the 100, you now have a friend there who can make sure in future things are done properly should you need to go back there for anything. It’s cheap investment - the coffee.

It can’t hurt.

Appreciate the comprehensive and detailed reply.

They actually messaged and said that the car will be "ready" tomorrow. Pops just got back from a trip and is probably gonna go check it out himself. I told him earlier not to have his hopes up but he's so fed up now that he's probably just gonna take it and go.

He can generally spot a misaligned panel gap or mismatched paint job from a mile away. We used to play this game called "smash job" where we look at every car on the road and see which car had any work done to it. A huge majority of cars on the road have had some repair or the other.

I'm gonna list the car for sale soon if anyone is interested, open to offers in the meantime:
