Nish’s F30 320i M Sport

Hi Guys,

Finally got a chance to do a thread for both cars, starting off with the F30 since it’s likely the shorter thread of the two. As I mentioned in my first thread, I was initially looking for a 320d as a daily driver. I did come across a few for sale within my budget, however the specs and condition of these cars weren’t that great. Most of them were either high mileage close onto 200k or non-m sport with very minimal extras which makes a difference to me.
Then there was this extremely clean low mileage last of the 3.0 D4D Hilux’s that came up for sale, but being nearly a victim of hijackings in the past with my polo, especially considering the areas I go to, I decided to pass on this one. My friend at SMG gave me a shout that she had a 2018 320i M Shadow Edition come into stock as a trade in. At first I was too convinced on a 320i, especially since I’m an I6 guy and BMW hadn’t had the best of reputations when it came to their 4 cylinder motors, especially because of the N20. This one however being an LCI with all the extras I needed, a B48 and a 1 owner car from new, I decided to go have a look at it and test drive it. Safe to say I knew I wasn’t going home without it.

In terms of spec:
• Glacier Silver
• LCI
• M Shadow Edition
• Adaptive LED Headlights
• Harman Kardon Speakers
• Sports Auto with Paddles
• Extended Cluster
• 403M Wheels
• Sunroof

I had all the extras I needed, with the exception of the ProNav screen and the digital cluster, which isn’t much of a train smash.

I bought this car last year December and I’ve done just over 5000kms on it ever since. This is my daily driver and I have to admit, the B48 is an underrated motor and its quite impressive for a 4 cylinder. It reminds me of my B58 but with 2 cylinders less. Surprisingly, I average around 7-8 litres or so which isn’t bad at all, although BMW claim it can get around 5ish which I highly doubt anyone has seen yet. It would be interesting to see what this car is capable of with a tune, I’ve heard that this platform is pretty solid from a tuning perspective.

Since buying it, I’ve gone and added a few black bits from Jabsport to give it a bit more of an aggressive look which makes a difference. I’ve added a front lip (flaps only), black double slat grilles, and black m performance mirrors. I have already ordered a spoiler, front canards, a white v-brace, and black eyelids which should hopefully be fitted on this weekend. From an exterior point of view, I think the only things left would be the Side skirts with the black M performance decals, black badges and maybe a set of OEM 405M wheels which are really difficult to come by.
We have owned 2 F30’s, a sportline 320i N20, my dad’s M-Sport 335i (still owns it), and this one being the 3rd, its safe to say it’s a platform we love. I’ve driven many G20s before, and I can honestly say, the F30 to me feels more fun to drive in comparison despite all the new tech in the G20.

Congrats on your beautiful F30 bud, A silver F30 LCi is always a winner.

The Shadow Edition should have had black kidneys, tinted tails and headlights as standard. Check the VIN decoder to confirm.

Appreciate all the kind words towards both my cars so far.

Even though I have the M140i, I find myself driving this car a lot more than I ever anticipated. B48 is really a mix of both, good performance and efficiency at the same time.

Earlier today I was notified that I need to book it in for a recall service on the My BMW App. I spoke to my service advisor at SMG and apparently a common fault on these cars are the airbags. So I’ve booked it in for next week, which means I’ll be daily driving the M140i then while this gets its recall done.

Congrats on the new wheel.
Looks so good in silver.

I also learnt with Our Countryman S what a gem of an engine the B48 is. Very underrated engine.
Very smooth, punchy and suprisngly efficient.

On my way home from work and gym this afternoon, I had a bit of a scare with my F30.

Having bought this car last December, it had a major service before I took delivery, so I thought everything was done. To my surprise, I literally had zero coolant left in the car on my way home today.

Once the engine overheated message came up, I was lucky enough to have been close to legacy yard, so immediately turned in, parked off and let the engine cool down for a bit. I couldn’t find a single leak anywhere where I was parked, nor could I find one anywhere in the engine. Everything was as dry as stone, even the coolant tank itself.

I opened up the coolant cap, only to see that there was absolutely no coolant at all in the tank. Since this happened so late at night, I had no choice but to buy coolant from the garage to get home, as I’d normally buy BMW’s coolant.

Will leave the car parked off for tomorrow until I buy coolant from bmw. Hopefully there’s no major damage or anything of that sort.

A bit of an update regarding my F30,

Unfortunately for me, I did find a few signs of coolant leaks in my yard this morning and I’ve noticed it’s gone below the minimum in the tank now which is not a good start to the day at all.

I think I’ll have to get a mechanic to come have a look at it today, don’t really want to drive it until I know what the issue is exactly.

I’ve never had any coolant issues on any of my cars, not even the M140i, but out of curiosity, how much would a repair cost on a B48 ?

Sorry bud, that sucks..

There's no real way to tell how much the repair would cost until you find what's causing the leak. Why don't you take it back to SMG and make it their problem since you purchased the car recently?

Hi

Please flush the whole system when you find the problem.

Some coolants are not compatible with each other and can cause serious damage.

Took me by surprise, would have thought they would have topped up on coolant before I took delivery in December.

I'll definitely take it back to them, maybe tomorrow or when I get a chance. Didn't really want to take a risk and drive the car this morning.

Do these cars not have a low coolant alert when the level drops below a certain point?
Thats another thing which doesnt make sense to me, because it usually would give me a low coolant message. Instead it went straight to engine overheating without any previous warnings
