New daily

Due to the soaring fuel prices, I decided to get a daily instead of using the X3. It's far from economical on school runs etc...

I looked at various options around a R200k budget, my intention was to get a brand new car so I could get exactly what I wanted and benefit from the full warranty. What I ended up with is over budget but I am happy with the decision.

I finally settled on a brand new 1.2 Suzuki Swift GLX in Midnight Blue pearl with a Gloss White Roof. I decided to go with a manual transmission as I don't enjoy the auto when it comes to these smaller engine cars. They always seem to be changing gears in constant search of the right one, which never happens unless you on an open road.

The features/spec:

Leather steering wheel with controls
Android Auoto and Apple car play with a 7 inch Touch Screen
Bluetooth Phone connectivity
Rear view camera + PDC
Keyless entry
Keyless start
Folding mirrors
Climate control
5 year AA Roadside assistance
The Suzuki Swift comes standard with a 2 year / 30 000 km Service Plan and a 5 year / 200 000 km Promotional Warranty.
Claimed fuel economy is 4.9L/100km
I didnt like the stock 15" wheels so I managed to source a set of 15's from Mintys Sandton, my go to place, Joey and Peter provide exceptional pricing and service. Suzuki offset the price of the wheels so it worked out.

So far, the car has 50km on it, so review to follow but im thoroughly enjoying it so far. The drive is superb, its very generous with space considering the size.

I had to wait over a month for this spec, was worth the wait imo.

Some pics.

Very nice but those wheels are not my taste. I would have at least gone 16 or even 17 inch. That thick profile makes car look weird.

Good cars these swifts.

I havent quite understood the methodology of spending a couple of hundred grand, in order to save money.

Good luck with the car, she looks great!

I was ganna say the same. OP maybe you can shed some more light on your math?

My Hilux D/C 2.5td is also heavy in town, but I don’t feel I will “save” alot by buying another car.

The saving on the cost of diesel will easily cover the cost of the Swift and its fuel. There's more in terms of less mileage and wear and tear on the X3. It's out of warranty. Too each his own I guess, without having to divulge too much, this works for me, perhaps it won't for others.

The tyres are the standard tyres that came with the car.

Good choice.
Curious why you didn't consider a base (even if almost new) Starlet Xi or Baleno GL for similar money?

congrats mater
enjoy the new daily
and i agree the cost of running a SUV on daily is expensive, bigger tyres(risk of loosing one on a pothole) more expensive brakes, and and and.
Even though its a diesel SUV, they still heavier than a little 1.2l

That 15inch will set you back 1000 bucks for a tyre, where as the X3 is 4k plus

I had a similar dilemma recently. After extending my maintenance plan and getting comprehensive tyre insurance, I decided to not get a runaround car. The sums will work out differently depending on what your needs and concerns are.

I had a similar dilemma recently.

Same here….all the additional costs made the business case flawed.

1) Insurance on new car
2) Additional car to maintain
Etc etc etc etc……

Nice little car though, enjoy

Thanks bro. I like the look of the Swift. The extras on the GLX made sense since I have them on the X3 and 440. My previous daily didn't have keyless entry and that alone irritated me. I test drove the Starlet and didn't like it. Just did not feel or ride as well as the swift.

Very nice, congratulations! My girlfriend received a brand new swift as a loan car from her insurance for the full month of Feb while they repaired her MINI. We really enjoyed using it, couldn't ask for a better run around.

Amazing cars and stunning colour combination! Congrats and wish you many many happy kms.

Any plans to have it ceramic coated while new to keep it protected?

Congrats, nice car and good choice as a daily.
Similar predicament at the moment and shopping around for a daily.
As you have said, the decision to spend a couple of hundred grand to buy a daily is based on individual need.
My budget is similar to yours, and in my ‘calculations’ a daily makes sense vs using my Supra everyday.
Fuel saving alone warrants the outlay, even though it would take a good few years to break even. However for me, it was more than just the escalating fuel cost, but also the crap roads that I use on my daily commute, and the lack of respect from other drivers.
And selling the Supra is not an option, love the car too much, so only alternative was a daily.
So my needs are more than if it makes sense budget wise, but considered other factors as well. Also it makes the use of the Supra the once or twice a week even more special.

OP, many happy and safe miles bud.
