Z3 camshaft sensor fault (code:65)

BMW Z3 1998 2.8l

Faulty DME (siemens) camshaft sensor fault 65

1.Had a diagnostic test done and it came up with fault code 65 (camshaft sensor)
2. Tested the camshaft sensor result showed faulty. When we pulled the rubber boot back on the camshaft sensor plug we found that the wires insulation had aged and became brittle causing the wires to touch and cause it to short out
3. We replaced the sensor with a new one from BMW just to find that the fault code won't clear
4. We then checked the harness to make sure there are no further shorts. We also made sure that there is continuity from the camshaft sensor plug to the DME plug.
5. When we checked for the 5v supply to the sensor and the -12v. We found that there is no 5v supply but there is -12v and the signal wire is fine to the DME.
6. Then checked all connections to and including the DME plug. Everything looked good. Checked all +12v supplies and earths as well as ignition +12v supply to the ECU. Everything tested 100%
7. That shows that it could only be the DME that is faulty and only on the 5v supply to the camshaft sensor. That must have got damaged from the short in the old sensor. The car starts and runs just heavy on fuel because of no camshaft signal.

Now the question is: Where could we find a good second hand computer box? or who can repair the current one? I have had my fingers burnt before from guys claiming that they can repair computer boxes and they can't.

Thanks in advance. Any advice would be appreciated.
