What is wrong with my E39?

Long time no see, good people. Through thick and thin, I have kept my beloved E39 540i. Been tinkering with it bit by bit over the past 3 years that it has been parked to 'rest' for a while (owned for more than 15 years).

Bought a new battery, which I put on a trickle charger, 5 new tyres and recently (a few months ago) started the engine which fired up to my delight. However, I was not so lucky yesterday when I tried to start the engine again. The video shows how it responded to my attempt. I am not a mechanic by any means but willing to put in the required elbow grease to get the car back to its decent daily driver glory days. Can anyone who had had a similar issue or knowledgeable please suggest what to look for in order to get it running again?

has the battery/car been on the trickle charger for a few months? Or did you take it off for a period and reconnect the trickle charger when you tried starting it.

It's been on the trickle charger for months (in fact since I bought the battery) until yesterday. I check it every now and them by opening the door to for dome light to come on, auto gear light etc, to see that the battery is still alive.

Yep. Thank you all for the pointer and you were correct. It has made me realise that it might be worth documenting all the work I carry out on the car henceforth, rather than just fixing each problem and moving on. In fact I have put together a video showing how this particular issue played out. If you are interested in seeing the outcome, it is available now on youtube.

PS: I also credited all the responders whose advice helped move the diagnosis forward in the ending credits as part of the Internet Garage Crew. There is still a long way to go with the car so might be needing more advice soon.
