The interesting video thread

This guy thinks he's the Tongaat version of Matt Armstrong or something.

The number of guys that underestimate the resources of their special internet friends is WILD :ROFLMAO: The days where this was anything other than another form of heavily influenced and high production cost media was 15 years ago. They have crews bigger than movie sets/TV shows in some cases

At some point there is just having too much information that the average person doesn't understand as well. There's a fine line between demystifying something and then adding to the confusion.

The reality is that there is a delta in value between a private sale and a dealer sale. Part of that is to absorb their recon and risk. Part of it is the money they make in between which includes financing. Apart from some very specific examples where this risk equation doesn't work out for them, by and large dealers make decent money on cars plus the financing and the products that they stack up on top of it. Some dodgier dealers include absolute garbage warranties and things like "chip and dent protection", 10-20K "detailing" packages that use the most basic of products and a mobile detailer applying them etc as add ons. These sorts of things (as well as predatory rates) are one side of the coin.

On the other, I have had F&Is (at S4, Merc, Hyundai, Honda and BMW) act in good faith and genuinely try their best. With the M5, I had even financed through BMW finance instead of Investec because of the near-bank-employee rate Bongani at Midrand managed to get. Bottom line is that if you HAVE good credit you WILL get good rates whether through the dealerships or your bank. I have never had a situation where I was not presented with multiple options including attempts at beating my insurance quotes. I don't feel this has ever not been a good thing or not in my favour.

We already have people who have absolutely no idea what they are signing even when the numbers are right there in front of them. They make bad decisions every day of their lives. These are the same people that look at you and wonder how you have nice things while somehow outspending you by a fair margin though the way they spend good money after bad. They want someone to tell them this is good, this is bad etc.

I feel like giving people yet another thing to ask for is going to be like them getting histories and documentation. They still need someone to interpret it for them to tell them if it is good or bad, like the literally dozens of people that have messaged all of us over the years with history/CIA reports that any normal human being would know to run away from. The reality is they don't know what to ask for except for "no comments" or "service history". Now asking them about DIC and Podium comparisons and and... Also remember these are guys who can't do the simplest of math (ie: monthly payment times number of months plus balloon and comparing it to the advertised price)

If you're smart about these things you'll be fine and can use it to your advantage. If not you'll get schooled. There is no magic to this or even any expose or shock revelation. It is just plain boring math. Literally.

I actually get what he is trying to say and what he is trying to show in these vids. The reality is that even if that info is seen by someone they won't know what to do with it and are susceptible to being manipulated still.

Manipulating people when it comes to numbers is a fascinating thing to me because it is the most basic of equations and most rudimentary levels of self control that you need to exercise to avoid this, yet these things get ever more crazy to the point where I think they are just pushing to see how far they can go.

I responded to a facebook post about these deals:

Pay first installment 1 June 2027: These deals are certainly getting 'creative' in the most anti-consumer of ways. There's a few similar ones with the chinese brands: start paying 1 Feb which is par for the course this time of year, and also free insurance for 12 months which is common on untrusted/proven cars etc. However this one to me stood out as really taking the piss.

It is so much worse if you even give it half a moment of thought. Folks are happy to accumulate an extra R65K in interest while the car depreciates (probably) R200K? I promise you they don't believe this is happening - their minds won't let them get out of the idea that 1 June is this distant time in the future and in the mean time they have a free car. Simultaneously, the used values of the car are actively driven down in value in the process. At this point they probably may as well believe it won't be an issue since they would have won at least 3 lottos in that time (and a euromilions too).

People are really willing to walk into a quarter of a bar hole to start paying later

As for destroying the value of the model, I have seen virtually no Amaroks driving around vs Rangers and Hiluxes everywhere, and that was arguably achieved by partnering with Ford.
