The best diesel for my E90 320d?

Hello Guys.

I'm new to diesel vehicles and I'm wondering if there is a particular brand of diesel that is preferred amongst the BMW community? JSN BMW sales person tells my wife that Sasol diesel is the way to go.

Also, since diesel prices are unregulated, is there a place where we can see prices of the fuelling stations in the Gauteng area?

I've done a Google search for more details but I'm not able to gather anything useful, let alone decently credible, hence I pose the question here.

I only use shell 50ppm (v power diesel).In the long run low sulphur will prolong engine and turbo life compared to 500 ppm.Not to sure about prices tho,im shell biased :=):

Thanks outlaw335. Your perspective is welcome and if I do try stick to shell 50ppm, at least I pass a few during my daily travels which makes it easier for me.

When I drove my 320d, a 2000 model, I only put in sasol diesel. :thumb:
Now, with my 325i, I only put in Sasol 95 unleaded.
Before that, with ALL my other cars, i always put in Sasol. :rollsmile:

Coisman, have you ever tried the other brands? Or do you just happen to pass a Sasol garage in your daily travels?

I visited the Sasol on Rivonia road and they only have 50ppm diesel available...what shocked me though was how much it cost...... Is it normal for 50ppm diesel to cost R11.15 per litre? R200 only got me around 17l of fuel and that does very little for a 61l tank.

Am I overreacting or is that how much 50ppm diesel costs? Can anyone else confirm?

Hi

I have a F10 diesel and only use 50ppm sasol.Minty's is currently R10.69
a litre and they are Sasol

Situated on Jan smuts drive Rosebank

I've concluded that 50ppm diesel is the best way to go, as long as it is available. At present it seems there are only positive responses/experiences with the Sasol and Shell brands.

I'm going to visit that Sasol garage on Jan Smuts, thanks Naeem786. =)

Definitely 50ppm. I use Sasol for city driving and Engen for long open road.
Did a 3200km return trip to the West Coast. Found that Engen gave me almost 20% extra km's. It's not as responsive as the Sasol, but on the open road, with cruise control enabled, that does not really matter.

I also only use the sasol 50 ppm... I fine shell to v power diesel to burn out very quick ....

Full tank sasol between 650 to 750 per tank
Shell between 600 to 650 per tank

I filled a tank of engen last week and seemed to last longer than a tank of shell. Can't be sure of how many extra kilo's it gave me tho,will have to try it out again. I don't know about sasol but I do agree that engen wasn't as responsive as the v power

No one use diesel from BP, Total or Caltex?
And, I read somewhere that it probably isn't a good idea to mix brands if you can help it. For example, I have a half tank of Sasol 50ppm now and I need fill up for a drive to Bloemfontein from Johannesburg..... I pass a few Engen stations but will have to go slightly out of my way to get to a Sasol. Am I wasting my time?

Also, I've heard mention that many fuel stations on the highways only have 500ppm...can anyone confirm that?

Have been using Shell Vpower Diesel 50ppm for a very long time but since switching over to Engen , i can clearly see Engen gives better mileage.

So IMO Engen FTW!

I have been trying Engen 50ppm and Sasol 50ppm and the results seem the same to me. At present, I just make sure I don't 'mix' the 2 too much if I can help it.

You have to use 50ppm with the new diesels or your diesel filter will clog up faster. The Europeans use 50ppm diesel as their dirtier diesel. So I would not recommend going for the 500ppm. Like Bimmer330 said, most of the diesel comes from the same place. I use a garage that sells the 50ppm at the 500ppm price, so that's how I make my choice. Since SA fuel stations don't take the temperature and density of diesel into account. I would suggest filling up in the morning when it is colder. You'll get more diesel for your rand.

Lol. I filled up today and paid R 11.56 per litre at the shell on New road.. I stopped bothering on what these clowns charge per litre as unfortunately the diesel price is not regulated so filling stations charge what they like :thumbdo:

I usually fill up at Shell and ONLY use 50ppm...


500 ppm is for those old diesel bakkies and trucks :biglol:

How interesting! I am definitely going to try refuelling in the mornings now.

Problem is in the mornings there is not realy time to stop at the garage.

I also use Sasol, as its near me, and I kinda always preferred Sasol, even in my petrol cars.
