So I want an e36 as my first car

Hi BMWfanatics. I'm a new member and I need your help.

I am a 21 year old student living in Cape Town and I've finally saved up enough money to buy my first car. I've loved bmw's all my life and of course I started deciding if I want an e36 or an e30. Having driven both models(e30 320i, e30 325i, e36 318is, e36 320i) I decided that I liked the e36 318is the most).

Side note:
(My budget for the car alone is 30-40k. I do know my way around cars and apprenticed in 2 machanic shops and also worked in suspension repair and fitment shop as a summer job between semesters)

Straight off the bat I realised that the e30's are way too heavy on fuel my liking. The owner(325i) reported fuel consumption of 13 and occasionally 14L/100km when city driving and 9-10L on the highway. This concerns me because I travel 150km(x2) once a month to go back home. I do realise that 318's and 316's are available but everyone tells me their just too damn slow. The e36 318is however, has a little more punch...not much...but enough for a driver that's used to driving a little corsa.

The e36 320i left me undecided. The sound was just amazing but it felt marginally quicker than the 318is while cornering much worse and having fuel consumption that seems a bit much for a 2L. I enjoy driving on mountain roads so cornering is very important to me.

An older gentleman suggested a e36 323i. He says that fuel consumption is relative to how you drive. Shifting at low rpms and only feathering the throttle in a 323 can give you 9L/100km in the city...apparently. A 323 does sound fun but fuel economy is a concern.

I complain about fuel consumption a lot but I do cycle to and from campus 2-3 times a week because I just love cycling. Maybe the e36 320/323 won't hurt my pocket that much after all.

Please give me your honest opinion and don't be afraid to hurt my feelings lol.

I have owned an E30 325i and E46 330i. Consumption is never going to be stellar because you are going to drive to experience the sound. It was all about the enjoyment for me and not the economy.

The thing is, the cars with the bigger motors and more torque will many times have to be worked less hard to get to cruising speeds and have low down torque to have some fun without having to rev the crap out of them. The mods, which no doubt you will eventually want to do, are probably going to end up being more on the lower end 4 cyl models. It's not a snob thing, I've had 4 cyl cars and lower powered cars before.

If you're not intending to use it every day, in traffic, I think you could be surprised by how far you can get on a tank of fuel without just grannying the 323 or 325 etc. I averaged about 10l/100 on both the E30 and E46 in mixed driving and I drove it like it was meant to be driven.

If you have the means to properly maintain the car, oil services, brakes and such, I'd say go for what will make you happy. Just make sure the car you buy has a history, have it checked out, and save a little bit extra for if a pump or something breaks. You don't want the memories of your first owned car to be vrot with problems, or being a boring car. Try and find the balance.

I know you didn't mention an E46 320i and a decent one might push up the price a bit but they're good cars with decent power for the car's weight and sound good also with minimal work. Also very comfortable for your drives home and the look is timeless.

e36 318is is a great solid car. cant comment on the fuel consumption though.

Apart from the 318is i would say rather look at a 325i or 328i. the 320i and 323i is laggy and you feel the weight.
I honestly think the 318is is a better drive than the 320/323i if you take away the 6 cylinder noise.

The reason I set my budget at 40k max is because I want to have enough money to do a little service right after I buy the car...for my own peace of mind

My father and uncle both own e46's 318i and 325i. Great cars no doubt but I really want something different. I know it sounds stupid but new scenery is needed

Most 328's are going for 50 even 60k. I saw a convertible for 40k but I'm not to optimistic on verts. A bit flashy in my opinion. I also don't think I'll ever take the top down.

Bro to be honest. 99% of e36 currently on the market needs extensive work. Even the clean ones need work.
I been busy with mine now for almost 2 years. It was really clean, but mechanically neglected. Most of which you can only find out when you purchase.
To date i have spent over 50k just on maintenance items and most the work was done by myself and a friend during our spare time.
Parts are scares, Good quality parts even harder. Most parts i was lucky to get from BMW.
its been 2 years and im not even close to saying the car is 100%.

Not trying to push you away from getting one, personally its my favorite BMW off all time.
If you do get one, plan for heavy maintenance and do it the right way with good quality parts.
Interior stuff is even harder to get. All those small items you find yourself driving 150km to buy a R50 part.

Good luck with your search
i saw what looked to be a really clean 325i for sale 2 days ago on Market place for 45k. I went now to find you the link but its gone. The clean ones sell that quick. So if you do find a clean one grab it.
My e36 purchases took me to some really far away places.

I had a super clean E36 318i which my brother bought for me in my student years. In not even a year, we had to replace a few gaskets due to major oil leaks, starter motor, power steering pump, air flow sensor, window mechanisms etc. I then jumped to a '06 E90 320d Sports pack which proved to be much more reliable.

A few years ago bought an e36 328i ( most petrol BMW's you don't buy for their fuel economy ) had it for about three years and only had to replace dampers, the car had a sevice history, kept it strictly to oil services and never had any issues, just take your time in looking around, you will find one.

Those are actually very good prices in Guateng. Shame they're all 50 and above in WC. Thanks for the links. Big thumbs up!

My 2c on the matter is I would love an e36 318is. The plan is to sell my car mid year and get a little town car and an e36 318is for a toy. Being able to do proper maintenance yourself is a big plus and has saved me a ton of cash over the years.

The only problem is fuel consumption. Just know you're going to use 10l+/100km. The 320i will have a much better exhaust note, but the 318is will handle better
