Rands Per Kilowatt – Which Hot Hatch Is Best?

Soap box time...

The hot hatch was originally created to offer middle income earners a decent blend of practicality and performance, at an attainable price point.
This segment was deliberately priced significantly below proper sports cars (Porsche) and German performance sedans.

The RS3/A45 pushed this segment into the hyper hatch league - in terms of performance and price.
Even a Golf R/135iM/S3, are easily treading on the toes of lower rung (maybe, slightly used) Caymans and F-Types.

Why would someone pay R700k + (I think a Mill for an A45S) for a car that is based on a mass produced hatch back platform?
Granted the performance is stellar, and may even bother those aforementioned proper sport cars, but to pay that amount of money for car that shares most of its DNA with a 118i /A200/30TFSI seems a bridge too far for me to reason logically. Especially, when you consider likely resale values after 5 years+.

For R700k (even under), once can buy a decent family car (with some go) + a decent sports car - granted both will be used with some motorplan left, but your resale knock after 5 years will be a lot less than buying a new hyper hatch back.

On the hand, if you really want one car that does it all and can kill giants, then a used hyper hacth with some motorplan left is the most sensible choice. Forget the old A45 - you need an old 140iM - these are destined for greatness!

Rather interesting that the Megane RS280 did not make the list, at current list price (R615 000) its the cheapest from the other five options...and Rands per Killowatt works out to R3000/kw

On paper and Youtube (add salt) it seems like a solid option

edit: had a look at autotrader: https://www.autotrader.co.za/car-for-sale/renault/megane/rs/25433186 - basically brand new for R85k less than list price...Rands per Killowatt = R2585/kw

Literally nobody buys cars looking at rands per kilowatt - another clickbait tactic.

I am with @"Mr_Y" on this one.

Continue making fun of cars like M5s or E63s etc - Marketing is the only one winning and they are helped by paid-for media and people who are convinced in the process that these things are still 'practical' or 'logical' choices

I for one, never preferred a Hatch over the Sedan.

M5 for me all day, everyday and twice on Sunday :bravo: :bravo: :bravo:

I do own a hatchback though, which is the vrou's, but that A3 Sportsabck in 27cm shorter than the A4 Avant anyway :smilebounce:

But did it cost as much as a sports car of that time?

it was expensive....based on a cheap base & you could have a lovely sedan for the price. It wasn't for the practical thinking man....the guy who cared about fuel economy or passengers....the guy who chose the sedan probably looked over at it in traffic and reassured himself that he made the right choice.

Which would be the best performance sedan, on a Rands-per-Kw basis? Can include estates/avants.

Consider this:
The Ferrari GTC4lusso has 507kw at approximately R6.2-million. That’s R12300 per kW

Power numbers aside, the last truly fun hot hatch that I enjoyed most was the Supercharged Mini Cooper S (R53). Felt like a proper go-kart and nothing afterwards really appealed to me from a "hot hatch" perspective. Whilst more power is always a bonus, for me, somehow the fun got a little lost along the way with the current crop of hatches.
