Looks nice, more info on your diy please
Hey guys,
Just then more info on it, for the guys that don't know the Plasti-Dip product, in short description - It's a removable vinyl / rubberized paint. And it easier to do then the normal vinyl sticker type stuff. And doesn't cause any damages to the paint work. So far as i got it, it's a new thing in SA, but it seems it around in the US for about 2 years now.
The procedure i followed were, and my suggestions:
Obviously removed the rims, made sure they are nice properly cleaned / washed and dried off. I started with a first layer / coat of the plasti-dip with a 50% transparency, your first coat probably is the most important one, obviously you don't want to create any paint runs. According to the videos on youtube from dipyourcar.com, they say it takes about 15mins to dry per coat, but i will say its better to wait a bit longer and make sure the coat's are dry before applying the next coat / layer ± 30mins. On the second coat I took it to 70/80% transparency and waited about 30 mins, third coat i took it to 100% black. One thing you want to make sure on the forth coat is that you completely covered the rim from silver to black and also make sure where the tyre meets / seals with the rim that there is enough plasti dip on the edge of the rim and even plasti dip on the tyre as well. When there is a nice layer of the plasti dip also on the tyre, it makes it easier to peel off the plasti dip once you finished with the rim. If applied a fifth coat, but just a thin layer, just to create a nice seal on the previous coats. Once you can feel and see it's completely dry, you can start peeling of the plati dip from the tyre. But i will suggest that you use a Stanley knife on the edge of the rim just to make sure while you peel it, that the plati dip from the rim doesn't lift.
Hope this helps
Lastly just to answer the heat question, the plastic dip can handle heat . i think up to 170°F and its flexible, i know you can also do it on the exhaust tips.
Cheers.
