JOHANNESBURG – Three petrol bombs have been found at Wits University this morning as the institution prepares to continue with its academic activity amid ongoing student protests on the campus.

The basement to the university’s architecture building was set alight last night however authorities managed to put the fire out.

Protests at the institution have gone into a third week now which have seen students clash with police, a bus being set alight, shops looted and number of people injured.

Meanwhile, management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has opened a case of attempted murder after two guards were allegedly locked inside a burning building.

The university's security control centre at the Bellville campus was set alight overnight.

The institution has suspended all classes until further notice.

At least 19 protesting students have been arrested after violence broke out at the institution’s Bellville and Mowbray campuses on Tuesday.

CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley says: “Given the fact that we have no guarantee that the security situation will stabilise, the decisions has been taken to suspend classes until further notice.

“Some of the measures we’re implementing include online tuition, alternative forms of assessment and for staff to work off campus.”

Kansley says they've laid charges against the protesters.

“They also torched the security office at the main entrance to the [Bellville] campus and at least two vehicles were also damaged. In Cape Town a building was also set alight. Charges of attempted murder were laid after protesters locked two security guards inside a burning building.”

Locking up security guards and torching the building they're locked up in?

These students are resorting to violence of an extreme nature. This is not a "protest" or a "demonstration". It's a damn riot and violence needs to be fought with violence. I see another Marikana coming, and these students are asking for it.

This kind of behavior is actually criminal!

Meanwhile the government is doing sweet nothing about it. They're more concerned about taking our Finance Minister to court so they can get control over the treasury and raping this country of what we have left.

Scary to think these could be our future leaders. I feel sorry for the police who are trying to protect and serve. I saw a police man who was hit on his head with a brick by one of the students. Its sad that this police man will risk his life for that individual, his family and friends day in and out.

Think about this for a second. Why isnt the guards ARMED?

They should have shot them and asked questions later, if a group of people approach you and it looks suspicious, you need to defend yourself. These guards are in charge of the property and has to defend it at all costs.

How did the group lock the guards in the building, our country is becoming a joke

My wife works at Wits and its really tense, and when I drop her off at work every morning it feels like she is a COP and has a dangerous job..

what I don't get is.. why burn down and damage property that only they would use, why burn a bus when its there to transport them..
AND

why the hell would they wanna take off their tops to fight for free education :roflol::roflol::roflol::roflol::roflol::roflol::roflol::biglol:

This has become more about race than being about free education as promised by the ANC government.

It could be a plot devised by the government to deviate attention towards. They could be plotting something else and while everyone is focusing on these riots we miss the other thing. I would love to speak my mind about this whole matter but we all know what will happen if I do, besides that speaking doesnt do jack with these type of baboons.

Please don't refer to these "Protestors" as "Students". What they are is a violent minority hell-bent on becoming struggle stalwarts. Criminals hiding behind a vale of a supposed legitimate cause.

These students know exactly what they are doing and why. NSFAS is not free education but a loan.
A government committee has been set up to deal with their concerns, let’s see what they come up with…
Meanwhile, we can only hope that no lives will be lost in their cause, which i support 100%...
