Good Evening Guys
I know this is a bit of a delayed thread and I do apologize for it, but I finally got some time to do a proper write up for this thread about my new daily SUV. Before I introduce the car, thought I’d speak a bit about how I came to the decision on this one.
On Saturday morning, I headed over to BMW Nelson Mandela Bay here in PE to test drive an X3 M40d, X4 M40i and an X3 30d. Even though the car I bought was an option, I didn’t plan on test driving one anytime soon as the ones I liked were back home in Durban which I told my dad to go view on my behalf for me. I get to the dealership and I see my car at the entrance of the service department and it caught my attention since it was the perfect spec, but I thought it was just a customers car in for a service. Anyways, we start off the test drives with the X5 30d and I quite enjoyed the drive on it and how big it was, although I found the 30d in that body to be slightly underpowered but overall I was happy with the comfort. Then we moved onto the M40d and that impressed me even more with its high torque and power compared to the 30d X5. Felt the X3 to be very comfortable and it’s actually quite spacious despite it being smaller than the X5. And then 2nd to last we ended up driving the X4 M40i. Now this is a car that I really enjoyed driving, especially with that B58 engine under the hood 😮💨 and that lovely inline 6 soundtrack. It actually didn’t feel like I was driving an suv when I drove it. If the M40i variant was that impressive, I can only imagine how much more impressive the full on X3M and X4M Competition must be.
While still in the M40i, I thought it was the car I would have ended up with until I got on talking with my salesman and I mentioned that I was considering other options. And immediately he told me that this specific car had just come into stock the day before as the previous owner traded it in for a brand new XM, hadn’t made the website even. We then ended up going for a drive in this car and that’s when I just knew, it was the one. I had completely forgotten about the M40i, I knew I wasn’t going home without it, although I did go back home in the RS3, but I knew that I was buying this one.

Never in my entire life did I think I’d own an M Car before 29 let alone before 30. Let’s not forget I still have the RS3, although I think it’s time say goodbye to it since I’ve had it for the last 6 years and now that I have this, it might be pointless keeping it. The closest I had to an M car was my F20 M135i which I sold all the way back in early 2018 if I’m not mistaken and I loved jt, but owning a a full on M car hits differently. I mean the X4 M40i would have been a good buy, but this is just on another level. It fitted well within my budget and considering all that you getting for the price, it’s a lot of car for the money.
I plan on keeping this for a few years to come, unless a nice spec X3M Comp comes up for sale at the right price. I might end up modding it at some stage. The plan is to do a complete black out in terms of looks, maybe a nice set of rims and definitely an akrapovic exhaust that’s for sure. I literally have a supercar but in a practical way. Tomorrow I am off to Knysna for the weekend and it’s the perfect time to see what it does on a long 3 hour road trip.
Thank you for all the help guys, I am beyond pleased with my purchase and I’m hoping that you guys enjoy this thread as I will be updating it every now and then of the car’s progress.
