N55 PCV problem

Hey there guys,

So a little guidance required here please.

December last year I had the Tappet cover plus gasket replaced since the PCV started whining. This fixed the horrid noise and the rough idle I had so I was over the moon when I got it back. Now, 3 months later we are back to square 1 again and the whining noise is back with a rough idle on start.

I know the PCV is a dreaded problem on the N55, but in all honesty, how are new parts only holding up for 3 months? Could it be that the new replacement part was just a bad one or is this something else causing it?

I had a long read on this and some people claim that only tuned cars have this problem, I'm sure someone on here should be able to add some feedback here then if this was the case?

I'm a little torn on what I wanna do now though, the options I basically have is to fork out another 10k for replacement (I ain't doing this every 3 months- fck that), get a PCV replacement kit which is way cheaper but this just feels wrong seeing it was brand new 3 months ago and I've seen a couple of people not getting rid of the whine, or finally if this is really caused by tuning the car - just get rid of the mods and tune - this would be painful.

Side note, I did have a chat with Ash at Xcede since they did the repair in December, just waiting on feedback from him, merely trying to understand why this is happening and if any other guys on here might be dealing with this too?

I bought my M135i back in November of last year and it also had the PCV whine that was sorted with just the PCV valve replacement "hack". Another potential cause is rear main seal apparently, especially if the PCV valve has gone.

I changed mine at bmw about 3 years ago .. Never had an issue again though...the pcv hack sometimes works sometimes doesn't

Where did you get your replacement kit from if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah this is what I'm trying to determine now though. Are you stock?

My car was fine till I got a Stage 2 tune, then the first one went in December. After the replacement, complete unit and not just the hack, it was fine again on my Stage 2 tune, then I got the extras done for more power and then the brand new one also took the sh%ts after only 3 months.

Some research is leading me to suspect that it's only tuned n55's with this problem and it makes sense since the car is working harder. But it's lifetime is hella short then.

When my first one blew yes I had bootmod...I then reverted to stock and no issues again
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Anyone on here perhaps know of a more permanent fix for this? Like upgrade parts from the S55 or something? Might be pissing in the wind but really would like to get it sorted for good.

@AshG108 , any input from your side perhaps bud?

PS side note: In order to check out the new replacement part the car needs to go into BMW since they provided it, they wanna inspect the car before giving another new one. We all know this is pointless, the moment they see it's not stock they'll blame it so I'm not handing my car off for a few days just to be disappointed.

uhm, it depends dude...the Tappet Cover on my stage 2 with pushing it crazy for years didn't give issues at all. the initial one had a defect when we fitted it and it was leaking so it went to BMW and they sent a second one which was perfect. It will need to get back to them and see what could be wrong by the design perhaps also

Thanks man, just curious though, they had no drama with you car being modded? Rumour has is that the moment they see the car ain't stock they blame that and deny any replacements.
