N55 or Tuned B48 Daily ?

Hi Fellow fanatics

After 6 wonderful years and 50000km of ownership, I felt it was the right time to bid farewell to my beloved Audi RS3 8V2 Sedan just about over a month ago. Ever since, I’ve had no choice but to daily drive my X5M since I’m only down to one car. I enjoy driving it everyday without a doubt, but I’m at a point where I feel as if I’ve been using it a bit too much to my liking. To be specific, I’ve put on around 8500km since buying it back in late January. You gents won’t to know the total fuel bill I’ve spent in that time of owning it thus far.

To preserve the X5M for long road trips and weekend drives, I feel as if I need a fun, reasonably priced and practical daily to drive. In specific, I’m looking at either a 2017 F30 320i LCI (B48) or an 2015 F30 335i M Sport.

I’ve had experience with the B48 in my 330i, and the N55 with my M135i a few years back. I owned both these cars when they were both in warranty without any issues, its only at the latter that I ended up playing around with the M135i and modding it.

I know for a fact that I’ll buy either one out of warranty and that’s where I could use some advice on both N55 and B48. Having owned the F30 330i in short space of time I did, I know for a fact that I’ll need a tune if I go the 320i route. As for the 335i, I know I’ll definitely have to change the chargepipe.

From a daily driving perspective, which would be a better option between these two cars in specific. I would like to hear some thoughts and insights, especially from fellow owners. The 320d will always be an option, only issue is dealerships are overcharging on them, especially the high mileage close to 200k ones. My budget is about R280k and I’m looking at newer than 2015.

A last resort is to consider trading in the X5M for a G05 M50d, however Its not something I'd be keen on doing since I've only owned it for just over 3 months now.

I considered a polo TSI, however insurance was quoting me more than what I pay for my X5M due to their high risk factor.

Regrettably not much to add to the thread, just curious what consumption you were able to extract from that RS3 8V2 when used as a daily?

320i B48 with software won't be as quick as the N55 is stock.

I have not owned either but have do have heard that both are rather reliable, although the N55 may have more preventative maintenance required compared to the B48.
if I was given the option between these two as a daily with everything else aside, easy choice - I'd take the 335i.

Another thing to consider is how much preventative maintenance will be required. Considering you have the X5M for when you want to have some fun, the 320i perhaps makes a bit more sense and with software still makes a reasonable amount of power.

Would have loved to have kept it, but considering I bought the F85, it didn't make much sense to have 2 performance cars. Got good money for it too, which I plan to use towards a new place.

If it didn't make sense to have two performance cars then it won't make sense now. I would go with the B48... or else you are going to end up in the same boat again except with N55 power instead. Then you will again be looking for a fun, reasonably priced and practical car with your stock F85 power and modded N55 power (You can tell yourself you're not going to, but it is an N55 so when something breaks and you 'upgrade' it, first chargepipe... then the cat/o2 sensor and then it's DP.... then it is going to be followed by software etc etc)

I don't know of anyone unhappy with the B48 and one of my mates had a JB+ on his which he was happy with for some extra power. That said I've never owned one myself.

The benefit of the 335 has to be the way the N55 sounds.

I know for a fact it’s gonna cost me a bit more on maintenance since it has an extra 2 cylinders than the b58.

This is very true thinking about it now. I said the same for both, the M135i and the RS3 only to end up doing mods to them 🤦🏻‍♂️.

Chances are I would end up modding the 335 and with a car out of warranty, it makes no sense to replace the broken OEM parts with another set of OEM parts. It will definitely be replaced with aftermarket which would definitely lead to tunes.

The B48 is a solid engine for sure,

Exactly, stay far away..

No interest in a diesel variant? They make lovely DD's.
Probably what I would do if you don't just DD the X5M.
An Xcede 320d/330d/530d will be decent and more reliable than the other 2 options.
