So this weekend I went to my dads house to take his 635 for a drive. He has been in hospital going on 4 weeks now. As some of you might have read see http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=25124

So I first gave it a wash and then a drive. Man what a car. I love this car. However it does need allot of work.

I'm not sure if its the diff or gearbox or both but its making one hell of a noise. Its a getrag dogleg box not to many of them around I think, not sure.

Anyway I had to share.

Comments and tips welcome. Where can I find parts Its a 81 lefty.

Henry, the question is "How far do you want to go with this?" and "How much money do you want to sink into this old girl?" She sure is a beautiful old lady. The Six has not yet reached the stage of the e9, 2002, and the classics before them, in that it will cost you a hell of lot more to properly restore it than what you will get for it, post resto. These car's time will come, but it is not now. The Six is also one of the older BMWs that is notoriously expensive to restore, and you will inevitably have to go to the agents for certain parts. Imo, there are two ways to look at this, one, go the whole hog, complete stripdown, nuts and bolts resto with money being no option. The second option would be to get the motor and running gear back to health, neaten things up, and then enjoy your increasingly rare beast. Gearboxes and diffs can be repaired, and I am not sure what state your motor is in. Trim-wise, and just by looking at the pics, junk that rear spoiler, slap on some genuine wheels, scour the scrapyards for the odd missing or broken trim part, of which a lot are common to the e12, remove the M badges, patch up the rust and spray where applicable, recover the seats, and give the car a good detail. This will not cost the earth, and give you a "clean" looking and very usable classic car. Just my 2c worth, and some food for thought. It sure would be a nice project, no matter which route you take. Best wishes to your dad.

You can change the tape head unit for a CD one and get an iPod working for MP3's from the steering controls.

Sunroof:
Getting the headlinder out - you start at the windshield pilars - pop off the covers labelled "airbag" right at the windshield. There are two screws in there.

Consider a secondhand one, a new one (R12k) or ask Jacques to keep an eye open for one. I hear "sunroofboyz" in Joburg specializes in this for cabrio's and sunroofs. Some repairs can be done with the sun roof still inside the car. Here is a pic of what it looks like - removed:

Thanks for the input, the motor is still running smooth and strong. Its just the drive train that needs sorting. The hole idea is like you said is to clean up the car. As for a full resto thats not on the cards. I want this to be a project and not rush. Selling the car in the future will be difficult as its a lefty. But that's fine. We want to keep it. Hopefully I'll have time this week to take it to someone that knows and who can tell me were the noise is coming from. Then to get that sorted. I do have a tight budget so it will be, find fault, save up then fix. Thanks for the tip about the trim but first on the cards is to get it mechanically sound. I have found a diff, gearbox and clutch kit, so all I need to know now is where the noise is coming from and can it be fixed or does it need to be replaced.

Unfortunately a good detail wont help it has a lot of deep chips and scratches. Will do piece buy piece but again no rush but would be nice sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the good wishes.:ty:

Thanks Frikkie but its just the sunvisor of the sunroof the clips are broken. As for the sunroof sliding and tilt still 100%

Stealers want R115 ex vat for each clip. Does that sound right?

As for radio very good idea  something to think about for the future.
