I rarely see any turbo m54s, is there a reason to this? I`ve been searching throughout different forms even on US ones but I mainly find m50 ob1 and m52 turbo conversions. There are a few m54 turbo`s out there but not a lot of info I can gather around them. I was checking the maintenance on n54s, it`s a heck of a lot more than what I thought and seeing them with 150k km on the clock seems low compared to a 300k m54 but it`s around 150k mark a lot of n54s are giving problems it seems, for me to get one I'll save till a later stage and look to get a sub 100k km one.
For the time being I'd like to build my engine, I`m not mechanically stupid, I use to work at a workshop so I`ve built a few engines. I`ve come across a nice e36 328i interior is 10/10 body is 10/10 full service records everything, buying it will make me the 3rd owner. I love my 330i it's far more luxury, I love the looks of the car to me It's near perfect, it would be if it was a e46 m3 lol.
What I'm curios to know is why I see a lot more m52 turbo builds and lately with todays tech m20b25 turbo builds are becoming common rather than m54? The m54b30 has a forged crank and rods from factory and it makes I think 24kw and 19nm more than the m52, both are aluminum block so I don't see the m52 being more reliable with unopened engine and boost. What I do know is e36 has les electronics and a cable throttle not electronic like the e46 which is better for tuning? I also prefer the sound in m20s and m52s over my m54, even when doing catless headers and doing an exhaust the don't have the same grunt the older I6 bmw engines gave.
So if anyone has a clue to why m52 turbo over m54 or vice versa I`d really like to know, I`m keen on doing a turbo build on either one of them, will be looking into making around 300kw for now or I might forge all internals and have it setup for big turbo.
Have a lekke evening everyone
