The M5 CP is also more expensive and the mercs hold better resale value. There's almost nothing to choose between them. I also don't think the CP is worth the extra cash over the normal M5.

The biggest competition that these cars face (at least in SA) is not each other, but rather the hot SUVs in their respective stables. M and AMG SUVs may be more cumbersome and not as quick as these sedans, but they sure sell alot better in our local market.

That CP is fast!
Does Merc have ppk in this model or the current AMG S is the final answer? Just curious

CP puts power on tarmac like a boss

On other countries you get a normal E63 and the E63s. In SA they only offer the E63s.

TBH, I feel BMW completely lost the plot with the new M5. The 4.4L turbo V8 is one of the worst sounding V8's out there. The E63 engine is almost identical but it's sonic signature is light years ahead. Next, they decided to make it a 4 wheel drive. Perhaps not completely the end of the world because you can still turn it off, but they've now added a huge weight penalty to the car.

For me though, what I truely cannot comprehend, is why on God's green earth, did they put a slushbox on an M car? WTF were they thinking??? This is supposed to be BMW's flagship, the ultimate driving machine. They've just gone from sheer driving pleasure to sheer driving boredom. Sure, it is stupidly fast in a straight line, so it'll do well in the southern states, where all they can do is mash the throttle from robot to robot, but anywhere else, it's tragic. :blueCry:

Are BMW really trying to make us believe that going from the M3 CSL to the new M5 is progress? :dunnoanymore:

Seems like you just want to hate the F90 M5.

In reality it is a monumental leap forward over an already brilliant predecessor.

1) You say it sounds awful. The Merc does sound better, but the M5 still sounds good.

2) AWD gives it a huge weight penalty, yet they’ve saved in other areas, so the car is lighter than both the F10 M5 and the E63s.

3) “Slushbox” fitted as opposed to M-DCT = boring. If less jerky shifts, M-DCT shift speeds and added everyday driveability equals boredom, then yes, it is boring.

4) Fast in a straight, tragic everywhere else. The 7:38 Nurburgring time disproves this.

The F90 M5 is a phenomenal car. We all knew by going with AWD and a torque convertor gearbox BMW would stir the pot, but all the evidence is there to prove it is some of BMW’s best work in recent years.

That's the problem, I don't want to hate it, but they've made some poor decisions for an M car. When you get into an M car, it's supposed to be an event, a tingling down the spine and a smile on your face. The new M5 just doesn't do it for me. The best comparison I can think of is the F90 M5 is like the Concorde, it'll get you to your destination stupidly quickly and with all the luxury and creature comforts you desire, you'll be relaxed and refreshed at the end of your journey.

A true M car should be like an F-15, fast, nimble, intimidating. You'd want to reach for the radio and turn down the volume so that you can hear the music of the engine. You need to grab it by the scruff of the neck and shake it, otherwise it'll own you. At the end of the journey, you want to be adrenalised, sweating and excited. There's a good reason why the McLaren F1 is in just about every "Best supercar list" you can find on the Internet and why the McLaren SLR is in pretty much none of them.

Is the F90 M5 a brilliant car? Yes, most definitely! Is the F90 M5 a brilliant M car? Nope, not really..

The M5 has always had that sleeper look which I love. Only a true enthusiastic will appreciate the finer details.

Times are moving on, the days of being uncomfortable in the pursuit of sports like feeling are fading off. Look at even the bakkies these days, they used to be farm equipment but get inside a Hilux or Ranger today and you might doubt its meant for the rough and tough. Same applies to the new M5. They have to sell cars and these cars must not just do one thing very well and suffer everywhere but rather do a lot of things well.

I took a ride in the new M5 and it is both relaxing and comfortable but when required it will put your eye balls in the back of your head. I have not had the opportunity to drive it yet but from the passenger seat I can tell you this is not child's play.

I get where you're coming from, but not all of what you said is completely correct.
Yes the F10/90 M5s don't sound anything like the E39 and E60, but they sound good nonetheless. Not AMG good, but good.
And 4wd was a good move, as the F10 M5 was a bit pointless off the line with the amount of power it had. Throw any more power with a similar chassis and suspension setup and it would just be a waste.
Regarding the gearbox, I am one of the few that love the fact that they went with the 8 speed box!
I hate the DCT almost as much as I hated the SMG.
It is basically an auto with manual characteristics.... If I wanted a manual, I would have damn gotten one!!!

Lastly, the M3 CSL cannot even be mentioned in the same sentence as the M5!
They were never designed to be comparable in any way other than the badge on the bonnet.
