I bought my dream car, turns out I got smoked! [also my intro post]

Hi guys!

This is my first post on the forums.

I recently purchased a 2009 135i Coupe, and thought I could not be happier.
However, within a day of purchasing I began to notice problems.

Here are some pics of the car:
My new baby, complete with a smoking issue

But let me rewind a bit...

So I'd been looking for 'go-fast' car for about two years, and finally came across this 2009 135i with 70,000km, going for R225K - a hella upgrade from my Polo Vivo Zest.
The car had an intake and full exhaust installed, and was running the JB4 tune. It also had a mean M3-look bonnet, bootlip spoiler and some CSL replica wheels, making for a pretty mean look.
What made things better is that the seller was a guy from the forums (don't know what his username is, but his name is JC), and worked at an RMI approved shop - thus indicating to me that the car had been meticulously cared for and serviced to no end.

I drove out to Strand (from the Southern Suburbs in Cape Town) on two separate occasions to test drive the car with the owner (he refused to let anyone else drive the car). On these drives the owner explained how he had meticulously cared for the car whilst in his possession, and that the car was 100% from a mechanical point of view, explaining that he had done oil changes every 5000km, and changed spark-plugs, coil packs etc. at regular intervals. In other words, he had done his preventative maintenance.
I trusted his word as he gave me references to other forum members who I knew personally (Bompie), and he seemed to be a generally straightforward and honest guy.

So I agreed to buy the car from him, once he had carried out some last minute work on the car - new rear brake pads were fitted from BMW.
I transferred R220K into his account, waited for the payment to clear and the cash to reflect in his account, and then went to go and collect the car the next day.

Now at this point I must mention that I was extremely naive not to do the following:
  • 110-point check at BMW or a BMW focussed workshop
  • Test-drive the car myself
  • Have someone more experienced than myself test drive the car
But... I trusted this guy. He was from the forums, part of the 135i club, and had given me a personal reference. So I didn't feel that I needed to do these things (though looking back it was extremely naive and foolish of me).

Upon taking delivery of the car and driving it home, I noticed blue smoke coming from the car on deceleration, and a strange ticking/rattling noise.
This unsettled me quite a bit and so I did a bit of research and found that I suffered from the all-too-common N54 wastegate rattle problem. However, that didn't explain the blue smoke...

At this point I contacted JC, the now previous owner and discussed the issue with him. He seemed semi-helpful and it seemed as if he would have helped me out with a rebuild, since he sold the car to me on the premise that it was 100% mechanically sound.

I went around getting quotes for rebuilds/replacements and found the following:
  • Riyaan (Rennzport) - 25K for turbo refurbishment, upgraded compressor wheels, and an upgraded wastegate
  • Sherwin (recommended by Bompie) - 40K for BMW OEM replacements
  • Brilliant Mechanical Workshop - they gave me two quotes: 36K for an OEM replacement; 14K for a refurbishment and upgraded wastegates
  • Turbo Tech - to be honest they seemed pretty useless. They wanted to tell me that the car doesn't have wastegates, the smoking was from piston rings, and they even asked me if a 135i is a diesel car... So I didn't bother getting a quote from them

Brilliant Mechanical Workshop stood out to me as I really felt listened to there. Ralph took his time to explain BMW's engineering boo-boo and contacted me the following day with the two quote options.

In the meantime I read countless threads from all sorts of BMW related forums (n54tech, bimmerheads, BMWFanatics etc.) and finally found a self-diagnosis test:
Hold the RPM's at around 1000-1500RPM and see if the car starts smoking. What this test is meant tot show is that the turbo seals are leaking oil, as at this low/zero boost pressure, the easiest path for the oil is to pass through the already-faulty turbo seals.

Sure enough, I found that my "100% mechanically sound car" smoked like chimney, confirming my worst fears that I would need to do some sort of turbo rebuild. [I will be inspecting the other common leak areas simultaneously - PCV Valve, Valve stems, valve cover etc. - but the turbos will need some sort of work done to get rid of the wastegate rattle]
See the two videos below:
Smoking is bad, kids

At this point I messaged JC (this was about two days after contacting him about the problem for the first time) to discuss the options for a rebuild/refurbishment, and the following conversation took place:
[Note the order of the pictures from 1 to 16]
Chat with JC

To round this all up, I know I was hasty and not thorough enough about my inspection and testing of the car. But gee... is there any decency left in the world these days?

What do you guys reckon I do?

A sad, frustrated and dissapointed noobie,
Taahir

Cant open the smoking videos.

I assume that the brilliant workshop confirmed its the turbos?

What i dont understand...did the car smoke when you tested the car and on first delivery? Only two days after?

Car still tuned?

Wow, just read the conversation between you and the seller. Shocking!

Anyway, I'm really sorry that this has happened, but you have openly admitted your mistakes and clearly already learnt an important lesson.

I like Brilliant Mechanical Workshop and their quote seems quite competitive, though I do not know the success rate of a turbo rebuild.

All the best with the repair.

No the car smoked upon delivery of the car. It must have been smoking when we test drove, but it's hard to detect if your windows aren't down.
My friend who drove with me to collect the car noticed the smoking because he drove behind me on the way home.

The car still has JB4 on it, but I've been running on Map 0 (i.e. JB4 off) just to be safe.

Brilliant Mechanical Workshop are yet to fully diagnose the vehicle, but the wastegate rattle was confirmed by Riyaan.

Yeah really unbelievable stuff...

I'm glad I learned my lesson, I just wish it wasn't such an expensive lesson :thumbdo:

Hopefully all goes well with the repair

Thank you!

Congrats on the car buddy and I'm really sorry that this happened to you. The wastegate rattle and smoking does develop over time, it isn't an instantaneous thing. I watched the videos and read your posts. I think you were hard done by a sly individual. It's a shame really. These are things to specifically look for when buying an N54 though. A little research would've alerted you to these known issues. I am not blaming you or anything but I think just use it as a learning experience because the guy was probably dishonest with you.

I think the R14k refurb is a good option to look at. It certainly is the cheapest I've seen. When I bought my N54 I got an idea of prices and I was preparing myself for R25k if the turbos were to go at some point.

Good luck bud:coolShake:

Ps...You cant drive the Jb4 on map 0
It will cause all sorts of problems. Remove it.

Good luck with sorting out the turbos...that is if it is the turbos. Try get a second opinion.

Pity you did not do a proper inspection of the vehicle. :smashScreen:

Wow that guy is a real piece of sh1t, and my eyes burnt reading his portion.

I hope you get sorted bud, maby give John lodder a buzz perhaps he can assist

Good luck friend

Twins, won't jb4 pick up and store errors with time stamps ? If he can prove there were errors perhaps he has some ammo, going out on a limb here bro

He can definitely check for error codes to see if there is something obvious and if there is to retrieve the freeze frames.

But smoking related issues wont always throw a related code...it will need a good hardware inspection of turbos...pcv...valve cover etc.

Yeah I now realise that I should have been way more thorough in my approach. I shall definitely use this as a learning tool going forward.

Ralph from Brilliant Mechanical Workshop is being really helpful about the whole thing and so I think I will go with him.

Okay I will remove it then. Thanks for the heads up.

I will try a second opinion too yeah.

I know right, I really should have been more thorough

Also check with JC if the car got a backend flash. Most N54 Jb users run some sort of flash with the Jb.

I should know...:=):

That guy is a piece of shit, hopefully you don't mean he's from this forum.

Good luck with the repairs. At least you know you'll really have a 100% car once you're done. The car does look very nice.

Look forward to a really 100% car once your turbos are done. You can get them reconditioned as long as you go to a reputable place they will hold up. Garrett specialist is Turbo Direct in GP... I think Julian Gandt in CT (Pyro) was selling lots of Garrett turbos, kits and parts so might know where to point you.

Unfortunately it is buyer beware out there. Should have turned around immediately as you left the premises at the first sign of this. It is not unusual for someone to drive behind to look for odd suspension movement, loose and hanging components (that might not be evident when the car is parked) and smoke.

3 short stories to show you you aren't alone:
1. One of my colleagues and I went to have a look at a Subaru STI - all checked out. The day the car was supposed to go for COR, the guy says it spun a bearing... turns out he took it out for one last drive. Estimated it would cost around 10K to fix and he would drop it off the price LOL... I laughed when my colleague told me this since anyone who knows anything about Subarus will tell you that can end up being a 40K+ job.

2. I had a deal signed and sealed on an IB E60 M5 2 years ago which was (thank god) at a dealership... Car was fine, but then ran bearings, ended up at a random sounding place in centurion (no problem auto I think) in an attempt to fix it... cancelled the deal and a year later I spotted an ad for the same car at the same dealer. If it was a private seller, I suspect I may have ended up with a situation like yours. Maybe they finally got it right.

3. STI I myself bought a long time ago now was a cleverly disguised MESS... ended up dropping more money on that car than the price I initially paid for it. Sharks and irresponsible guys out there - even dealers. Fortunately it is a 20K lesson and not a 200K lesson (I assume the rest of the car is deserving of the asking price)

Too many guys say 'i've never had a problem' or 'no accidents as far as I know'

I've also learned the hard way that your version of 100% and the seller's might be VERY VERY different - many wasted trips going to look at trash.
