how to fix n54 wastegate rattle?

I am looking to buy a 2007 bmw e92 335i but it has a bad waste gate rattle on revs. I read a few post on other forums and i read this. Just wondering if anyone has done it? Or are there any other ways to get that bad sound away. "all you gotta do is loosen the 10mm bolt on the wastgate actuator and tight the actuator rod with 4mm wrench and rotate 2 and half revolutions then tight back the 10mm bolt . this fix works wonders and now my 335i has better throttle response and no beer can rattles"
Is this true?

First i have heard of it, you can mask it with a JB4 install, but to get to the turbos to do this you are gonna have to drop the whole subframe almost, unless someone else know how to get to the turbos in another manner

Yepp this can be done, but its a pain in the ass to get to the actuator rod on a LHD car.

This is a temp fix, the rattle will came back.

Also it does not sort out the movement (play) that the wastegate has when it shuts.

The JB4 is also a temp solution.

Check with Tune Tech, they have a hardware fix.

OP... to access the waste-gate arms you need to drop the downpipes and then it can be done, typically its the rear turbo that rattles more than the front because the turbo faces the wrong way.

However adjusting the arms is just a temp solution as the cause for rattle is the actual arm wearing through the housing bush. if you are rattling and your turbos have low mileage on them then a wastegate kit is a good route to go, if the turbos have more than 100k kms on them I would honestly suggest you replace them while your at it.

If you speak to John @ Leo Haese, he will arrange a fantastic price for a new set from BMW. If it is fitted by them then BMW also carry a two year part warranty therefore allaying any fears of failure or rattle again.

Goodluck!

Wow thanks allot for your help guys. Some quick good replys much appreciated! I have also heard of the jb4/mhd tune that can help reducse the noise. But everyone says its not a permanent fix. So what would the cost be for 2 new turbos with the newer 8mm actuator? +- at leo haese?
The car has 120000kms with a shitty flash tune on it (the guy does not know what tune even he bought it like that he said) and downpipes and a big intercooler. I was hoping for more power as i have a 04 audi allroad 2.7tt fbo making about 270kw and that felt almost just as fast as the bmw... And even faster out the hole.
Can the rattle reduce power or boost? The shitty tune had to play a role in it...
What are your thoughts on mmp turbos they are about R40000. But will they last?? Im looking to make 600whp for a daily thats my goal on the steptronic box. There is a guy in durban running 600whp on a steptrinic he just lets off when he changes gears and ge limits boost in 1st gear.

I've heard good things about MMP, but of recent PURE turbos have been putting out some really strong cars, theres currently a M4 on PURE turbos running 10.1 sec over 400m in the US.

Keep in mind if you do go this route, there will be more changers that will need to be made in order to support the hybrids.

My suggestion is get our stock file.

Get a reputable tuner to go over whats currently on the car. You can then decide weather to go with a flash or piggy back or both.

Turbos through BMW with handing in your old ones should be around R16k. That excludes fitment.

With regard to getting to 600whp , you gonna need bugger turbos turbos most likely as well, and we'll a full Fbo kit including Inlets.

If power is what you after, then I wouldn't replace with turbos, I would go with hybrids to replace the stock ones and get jb4 running together with MHD back end flash to tie things up.

You can feel free to contact us when you ready to start your modding journey. We've been years in the game and been dealing with the JB tunes since their inception.

10.1 wow that must be a record on rwd its very good any idea what he's trap speed was?
I have heard of some pure stage 2 turbos that have blown with only a few 1000miles. so im leaning to mmp even tho they have also had some blow but less.
16K from bmw with a exchange is not to bad. But then they are out so i might as well go and make them hybrid internals on stock turbos. Is there space for bigger internals inside the stock turbo? And are the gains worth it? Also will they last if they are brand new with billit internals?

The other option is going big single turbo like a 6262 or a 6466. Any good single turbo manifold builders around?

I have bought 19 inch venatici mags with 265/35/19s at the back and 235/35/19 in front.
A set of titanium alloy 3inch catless downpipes.
And a bms charge pipe and dci.
I also paid a friend that went to texas for a week to bring me some mmp inlets back :D
Just need to choose between jb4 or mhd or both lol.

Have a look at our advertiser section. We have everything you need in house in terms of all the bolt on mods.

Jb4 with MHD back end flash, that's what you want so that all your safety perimeters are still in place. Also when you decide to get meth installed, the JB really comes In handy and shines.
