Giz,
When you actually calculate the damage, its fairly easy.
Let me give you a low down.
You may repair up to to 70% of the value of the vehicle be it trade, retail, or the differance between the two, depending on your policy.
So lets take this car for example, book value is what... 65k (not street, book)
So lets say you have 45k for repair.
Lets say you are using pirate parts, cause new you will not make it. And there is very little second hand available, due to the hail.
As a side note, what one of the major Mercedes approved body shops did the day after the hail hit, they sent a couple of guys in bakkies out to the scrapyard, and bought every single merc bonnet/bootlid/beading that was in good condition.
Anyway
Pirate bonnet 1800
Bootlid R2500 (second hand if your lucky)
Then Dent press the entire car, where my labour costs is around 8k for the dent pusher., but because its so bad, you still have to paint.
Then its off to the body shop where they smooth over all tool marks by the PDR, as the metal is actually stretched.
THen prob bout 30 hours body shop at R220 an hour 6600
THen over to the paintshop, where you need prob 40 hours preperation at R180 to get the car ready for color 7200
Then you need to allow time for strip ans assembly of beadings, call it 2k for the car.
THen paint, 1400 on average per panel, 13panels gives you 18200 in paint
Then flat+ polish another 1600
Bonnet 1800
Bootlid 2500
PDR 8000
Body Shop 6600
Preperation 7200
Paint 13 panels 18200
Thats 44300
But now you got to add in things like windscreens, dome beadings, cowel panels, lights ect, which could easily get you another 5 to 6 worth of parts.
So call it 50k in this care, its over the economically viable point already.
Its scary guys, the amount of money running around the industry at the moment is frightning.
I have paid my dent presser, single guy, has one guy helping him, push all of my cars, which to date over the last 2 months earned himself about 160k in cold hard cash, and i still owe him another 40k
My paint supplies bill for last month was 78k
My staff weekly bill is up significantly as well having to have found more people, and fired a few of them arleady.
Thus, with the costs spiraling, its easier to just write the car off, pay the customer out, and sell the car then at 60% of its book value.
Hopes this gives a bit of a indication, its expensive to repair.
