discussion Gearbox oil service options? (Cape Town)

Hey everyone, my car is at 115,000km. I'm looking to get my gearbox inspection/oil done. I know they need to change a couple things like the filter and oil, not sure what else specifically. But I was wondering what my options are?
I know the gold standard is ZF, but I'm wondering if it's a must or doesn't really matter? They quoted me about R6900 Incl VAT, feels a little steep and Im wondering if there's any good reason to get the service done by them specifically. I also read (dont attack me) that the oil replacement isnt a difficult thing. Any advice is appreciated. Im planning on doing a road trip to Durban end of December from Cape Town so want my car in good condition.

When my car hit 100 000 km I bought the pan (which includes the filter) and the oil from ZF. My cousin who is the only person I trust with my car did the service for me.
If you know the correct steps to follow you can attempt to do it yourself.

Ah I see, okay cool thank you. They mentioned that they do a inspection because changing the oil could result in the gears being stripped? Know anything about that

Yes they do.
My cousin checked it for me and confirmed all was well. 16 500km done so far and no issues. Cant say I noticed a difference after the service.

Hi
I would take it to ZF.

After the service, they clear all the adaptions and set new parameters on the gearbox. The clutches and valves in the box needs new values as it is running with new oil.

Please take it to ZF. Get it done right the first time and there's a warranty on the work done IIRC. My 320d was much smoother after the ZF service and did another 90k km post service before I sold it without skipping a beat, even after having xHP Stage 3 flash done.

Sending it to the wrong/inexperienced mechanic could end up being a very costly exercise and your school fees could result in a lot of regret for not just paying the R6900. Not everyone has a cousin like Charlton's that gets it right.

Very true bro.
Its better to pay to get it right then to be penny wise and pound foolish

Adaptions are only reset when the gearbox is rebuilt...not when just an oil service is carried out

100%

besides the service kit cost +- R5k ...R2k labour for some peace of mind isn't too bad. Also they offer a complimentary diff service if you provide the oil.

Really a no brainer to take it to ZF.

I have been to the GP branch, the technicians are knowledgeable and certainly know what they are doing. (y)

Curious, did you get the service done? And at which branch ? How was the experience and any hidden cost etc?
Got my done in September at the Germiston branch.
The cost was 7k and it took less than 2h. Car had 97km on the clock. Cannot say I noticed any difference after the service.

They did a lot of explaining on what they are doing and why. Was too technical for me to remember.

It says every 100,000 on the flyer and the invoice reads every 80,000km. Which one is it?

They explained to me that the first service is 100k thereafter 80k. The invoice was indicating my next service.

Thanks for the clarification. I've still got some time to go. Unfortunately ZF closed down in KZN, I will have to make a trip up to JHB when I'm due for a service.
