Had a quick look at it, in the policy wording document (page 4 of 13), item 5.4a

You must tell us if your car was rebuilt or modified
a. You must tell us immediately if your car was modified from the manufacturer’s specifications, for
example:
− changes to engine capacity;
− enhancing your car’s performance; or
− changes to the suspension.
b. We do not cover rebuilt or modified cars. We will cancel your Cars (MotorXtender cover) section
with effect from the date that your car was rebuilt or modified.

This is inline with all the other aftermarket warranties, the term "modified" is always used loosely, and in general, companies will always look for an opportunity to not pay out any claims.

I'd get that sales rep to put note your modifications and cover still being active in writing.

Fully agree and all done.

I also insisted on them inspecting the car in detail together at an approved workshop of their choice and taking a record of the car as is prior to inception.

Hence I need to make it clear that everyone needs to do their own due diligence before anything and not take my personal situation as advice.

So as the title would state, i had to say goodbye to my N20 320i. Genuinely could not have hoped for a better car and experience since purchase. Still have mixed feelings about it. Hopefully they will subside with time...

That being said, I was in the market for a new car as a personal celebration for a few things coming right after a long period of losses. I felt i was ready for a significant leap, so I started the hunt for an F82 M4. There were a couple floating around on the forum at the time but i was too slow to pull the trigger and next thing i see the dreaded 'Not open for further replies.' error. Anyway, after hitting the streets and taking about 3-4 for a run i realized a 2 things:
1. It was close to impossible to find one that was decently priced and did not have worn seats/steering wheels, rattles and was unmolested; and
2. After jumping in and out of a few, i really loved the car and everything about it but after owning a 4-door, i knew i would prefer the practicality.

ENTER THE SEARCH FOR AN F80 M3 THEN! RIGHT?

Well, let's just say i was in for a ride. Literally. Against my better judgment i ventured into the dark corners of facebook marketplace. Found an Austin Yellow M3 that seemed to hit the right price, mileage, spec, etc. From the outside, there was not much to complain about. Car looked neat. Panel gaps were not out of the ordinary. Etc etc.

RED FLAG 1 - The guy mentioned there was paintwork on the bumper due to a minor fender bender. Provided there was no major work needed, i was willing to factor that into the price. But first thing i noticed on startup was that there was an aftermarket exhaust. Mind you, this car was listed as 'stock with no mods and full service history with agents.' His response was that BMW installed a 'custom exhaust' for him. I s**t you not. Not an M-Performance or Akrapovic. This one was fully 'custom.'
RED FLAG 2 - When i took it out on the road, I also noticed was that the car was pulling significantly to the right. Apparently, this was due to him putting on new tyres and not having the time to balance and align the car. At this stage i already knew i was not buying this car but hell, i had driven all the way to Krugersdorp from Sandton in peak traffic. I was gonna get a joy ride at least...
RED FLAG 3 - The car also had excessive creaking and rattling. I'm used to the occasional creaking noise as i owned the F30 with the shadowline trim. It's a known thing and an easy fix with some teflon tape. But this specific case was borderline ridiculous. I could feel all engine vibrations through the seats, door handles, steering wheel, everything. Maybe at this stage the joyride was not necessarily a good idea...

If you have made it this far, don’t worry, there is more…

So I reached out to Francois (@Coisman ) for his help in getting the history of the car. Just for sanity. In short, the car was written off by Old Mutual in 2019. It was then bought by a salvage company as a disposal and after that it was bought by a panel beater. So it was a proper clusterf**k and not just a couple of curtain airbags popping off.

Anyway, back to the drawing board. I was still in the market for an M3 but I was now deliberate in looking for one at a dealership. Just my luck I found one in Audi Somerset West. Also Austin Yellow. Not my first choice but I could live with it. Called them up on a Monday afternoon and was on a plane first thing Tuesday morning. Went there straight from the airport and when I got there, the sales agent said that someone came by that very morning and dropped a cash offer for the car. Keep in mind my refundable holding deposit just needed to clear because I made the payment after cutoff the previous day.

What a gut punch… May as well have flushed that R 6000 odd for the plane ticket down the drain. I was just about to request my Uber when he suggested I have a look at something else that was just traded in….

For now i have to go an be a good employee.

But stay tuned...

So picking up where we left off, he walked me to the workshop where they were getting the car through valet etc etc. Yes, I know, I have not said much but the back story matters.

Anyway, it’s completely different to what I was looking for. At first glance, I actually asked him if he was kidding. Not only was it not what I was looking for at all, but let’s just say I was CERTAIN it was waaaaay outside my budget. As is the usual in winters in the Cape Town, it was also bucketing outside, quite literally. I told the sales agent thanks but no thanks, my Uber arrived and I would be damned if I was to risk it and miss catching my overpriced and now seemingly useless flight back to JHB. But he got the key from the workshop technician and said since I’m there, I might as well just take a drive (in the rain). Already feeling the chest pains from the flights, I thought heck, why not. So off we went.

I just have to say, first and foremost, the build quality was top class. The previous owner (who, as it turns out, is quite a ballie) took care of the car more than he cared about his grandkids. He travelled quite a lot and the car ended up sitting for months. His wife was in need of a new car and he was not comfortable letting the her wrestle around in this car. So he went to the dealership and literally swapped it for an Audi Q5. The car literally never touched a car wash since he owned it. And it showed. Everything looked clean, in place and hardly used. All the usual suspects (door handles, steering wheels etc) were in exceptional shape.

As for the drive! I could already tell I was in something special. And as it turns out, this happens to be last of the mohicans. Given it was wet, I was not going to play with the driving modes but rather try and scrutinize the drive as much as possible. The thing had all the bells and whistles for its model. Pano, HUD, adaptive suspension, real factory carbon bits and so on. I… well… I literally fell in love on the spot. Didn’t think it was even possible after dreaming about the M3 for years. I still think about the F80 every now and then as I drive down Grayston Drive while converting overpriced 95 octane fuel to noise and tyre smoke. This is probably a hint already… it is TERRIBLE with fuel. The close-your-eyes-and-swipe kind of bad.

There was still an issue. Price. Mind you the car arrived that very day. Well, in a plot twist with all the bad luck I was having before, he literally said they were willing to sell the car at the same trade-in price they paid for it. It was not an Audi product and the dealer principle was not too hellbent on squeezing much out of it if they had a quick flip offer. So basically as I jumped into the Uber, I told him to move the holding deposit for this car once it cleared and we will talk when I get to JHB.

SIDE NOTE – Really have to commend Audi Somerset West for going over and above. Before I got to the airport, the agent (Kevin) confirmed the funds were reflecting. He also told me as soon as I got the paperwork sorted, he was more than happy to load it on to a transporter and ship it to Audi Sandton for handover (for free). The whole transaction was really a breeze and they were patient with all the delays on my end.

Anyway. After the longest 2 weeks of my life, she was finally home!

Thanks guys.

Much appreciated.

It’s definitely a departure from the M cars in terms of driving dynamics. Tons of grunt. Easily going sideways with traction control on in 3rd gear. Let's just say I have had ALOT of butt-clenching situations when i've put the foot down to take off at traffic lights or take a sneaky gap in front of taxis. With traction control in sport (not even fully off) it’s borderline un-drivable. Had to double-check and make sure I have decent tires and tread (Pilot Sport 4’s all around) because the loss of traction became laughable.

I now see the logic behind some of the guys saying the C43 is better in terms of usable power BUT regardless of logic, reasoning and sensibility, it’s always C63 or nothing

Anyway, as is the custom, I went to see Juvan at Xcede for some power runs. Was pretty hot on the day but the Dyno graph is attached. Still bone stock so the car is looking healthy and I was happy with the outcome.

List of things to do:
1. Replace all badges and emblems with the gloss black options;
2. PSM Design carbon fiber spoiler;
3. Probably software and a catted downpipe once I’ve grown big enough minerals to turn up the heat. I know most guys run straight downpipes but I'm worried I'll wake up the whole complex on startup. I guess we'll see later down the line.
