This is regarding my 2014 F30 320i N20

When I purchased the car I noticed that there was a slight whine in the rear which I thought could be tires or brakes or bearings which it is not after research points me to the diff. The whine has gotten much louder and I wanted to check in with the forum if anyone has sourced and fitted a rear diff what was the cost and also can I diy the job in my garage?

any advice or assistance with pricing of a diff and where to source one within Johannesburg would be highly appreciated.

When was the last service done on the diff and what is the mileage? On any transmission component, there comes a point where an oil change is just an expensive way to watch metal shavings come out. Clint will be able to advise on whether you've reached this point or not by spilling out some of the diff oil and checking for evidence. Motul is the way to go IMHO.

With the whine progressing, it sounds like the point has already been reached, but get a pro to check.

Diff oil leaks are notorious to monitor because of the viscosity of the oil, location and mode of failure of the seals/breather blockages etc. If the internals are fine, you may get by doing some basic stuff. If not, head to the scrap yard, service the salvage diff and then pop it in. Don't waste time trying to fix it IMHO

Thanks everyone for the replies, I think my best bet would be to replace the diff rather. I have a feel the old one has seen its best days. WIll start shopping around for a diff and maybe when I get a new one will change the oil before I put it on to the car.

To be honest I dont even know, My wife has been using the car and im guessing its long over due now to do the Gearbox and Diff service. Im gona start looking soon for a diff would be my best option. Need to also get the gearbox serviced and do a whole lot of other maintenance on the car.
