E82 120D advice

Hello BMW owners,

I'm in my 20s and potentially buying my first 2010 BMW e82 120D (upgrading from a Corsa Lite). I've saved up enough so that I can buy a secondhand model cash with 140 000km on the clock. The problem I'm facing is whether it's a wise decision at this point in my life.

For the next year or so, I need to resume articles, so my income will dip. I'll probably be able to save R2k/month on the BMW's future maintenance and repairs (Things will get better the following year).

Is the e82 120D affordable and reliable for someone like me? If the 120D I get is well looked after, with a full-service history, will I have to worry about things constantly breaking? In other words, is the 120D a money pit that will destroy me (in your experience) or, am I looking at upkeep costs associated with general service intervals? I've also heard the 120Ds have a timing chain issue, so I'll have that fixed as preventative maintenance if need be.

All things considered, I am open to Polos and Toyotas. I'd just prefer driving a car I’ve always wanted.

Hi bud

They are awesome cars and I think you will be just fine.

Obviously get a well maintained example. If you search for 320d maintenance on the forum you will find all the preventative maintenance items you need to do like Vibration Damper pulley etc.

Good luck with the search and be sure to post some pics once you get it.

If it was cared for previously,it should give you trouble free motoring for a very long time.My wife has a E87 120d with about 158k km on the clock and it never misses a beat.

We have only done shocks and general services on it,the crank damper is going to be done relatively soon, but apart from that the car is an absolute pleasure to own.
