Hi guys

I have a 2002 E46 318i Automatic , car has done just over 203 000 kms

Im sending it in on Monday to SMG BMW to have the valve stem seals replaced . They will be replacing it without taking the head off , I believe they have some special tool which allows them to do this .

On my estimate

Im replacing :

Valve stem seals
Profile Gasket
Slide Rail
Collar screw

As well as replacing the oil and filter. (needs this anyway)

What else do you think I should have replaced or looked at while they are working in that area?

I had an issue 3 or 4 years back where the chain skipped , and they replaced many parts in there , (thankfully I was parked off and turned the key once so no engine damage occured) Iv probably done only about 40 000 kms or less since then . Should I have them replace the tension bolt again?

Thanks for all reply's!

Just a question, why are you sending it to SMG BMW? I know that Tune Tech is able to do the valve steam replacement with the head on too. Might be worthwhile to get a second quote from them to do the work.

Hi Zippy,

May I ask how much they charged you?

Hi

I think it was around R9000 but I also had them do an oil service as well. Change oil and filter .
Everyone else wanted to take the head off and replace this and that I just wanted the seals replaced , it took them 2 days to do and they have a special tool so the head does not come off. And I didn't see a need for the head to come off. Would have been unnessasary and taken to long . The other guys quoted me a lot more as well and I wasn't sure what gaskets or bolts they woul have used.
