E46 M3 Rebuild in the Works

This baby was sent to the tuners for a tune and new camshaft, but they put in the incorrect rocker arms which caused massive damage to the cams. They then, upon an attempt to fix, incorrectly reassembled the head which caused the car to go into limp mode. It was over-fueling and it caused bore wash, and the ridge in the block was badly worn.

So, we've done a complete strip down of the motor for repairs and reassembly. New rings, cams, valve stem seals and other wear items. New cam shims installed; the head needed cleaning after the incorrect oil was used; bearings needed replacing after the bore wash from the over-fueling; etc.

The new engine is now assembled and in place; the cam clearances just need to be confirmed. After this, the software will be flashed back to stock and we will look at new options and the next steps to take.

The rear quarters are in for a respray.

Bad software can be so disastrous. I shudder to imagine the costs involved with this S54 rebuilding.

I feel your pain Chris...

"It was over-fueling and it caused bore wash"

How long did it have the file on for? Also, this would prob be a stage 1 tune.. how could it possibly overfuel so much?

The file was on for a period of about six months... But the issue was not caused by the period of time. It was caused by the WOT-loaded dyno runs that caused massive wear and tear with the motor running poorly. It was during these WOT-loaded dyno runs that the bearing wear also occurred. From what we can piece together the car was subjected to about 8 hrs of constant dyno abuse while they tried to get the timing and fueling correct.

Small update:

The engine is in. All that's left to attend to is the ignition, induction, and all the bits and bobs some folk like to refer to as "smalls" ;)

Yes yes, we know you love pics
