If your doing allot of track and gymkhana's then a super charger would be a great upgrade! power all the time for a once off fee! plus the car will sound awsome!

Not yet but I plan to play a lot more although I dont expect to compete with the M's etc.

As far as I know Schrick cams are hellish expensive:thumbdo:

thats the reason i have not done this yet... but a 330i cam can be got alot cheaper and might give similar gains :)

That is highly debatable. What is the differences between the 323i/325i and 330i cams? Me thinks you need a longer duration and higher lifting cam to make a big difference. As far as I know the rest of the head and valves are exactly the same on 325i and the 330i.It would be really cool to have a 325i that makes similar power and torque as a 330i. The nice thing is that the 325i is over square and could potentially rev a lot higher than a 330i.

from what i have read the 330i intake cam has more duration than the others (bmw do not publish cam specs)... rest of the head is the same like you say :) so potently less restrictive at high rpm when used on the smaller displacement...

325i with 330i cam will not make 330i power , that comes from displacement , it may make 10 Kw more than standard , other mods ( zorst , chip , CAI ) will see you near 170 Kw .
Good luck .

agree supporting mods are needed but the 330i cam could bring the 170kw closer to 180

Yes the 330 intake cam is the only difference in the head. The rest even share the same part numbers. The intake manifold and MAF etc is also different.

I would not only do cams but would look at doing the whole stroker conversion.

What will be needed:
- an m54b30 crankshaft or s52b32 crank shaft (both are the same)
- m54b30/m52TUb28 connecting rods
- m54b30 pistons
- m54b30 intake cam
- m54b30 intake manifold with at least the DISA valve still on it ( i believe the other intake accessories are interchangeable)
- m54b30 "purple" injectors
- m54b30 throttle body and intake boots
- m54b30 compatible intake
- m54b30 maf sensor

I worry about the 6000 rpm crank problem on the 330i , That 6500 rev cutout needs testing frequently .....so it may be doom and gloom !!

Yip, I must admit, the 325 feels a lot smoother at high rpms:thumbs:

I never knew about this....my 325i also revs all the way very smoothly ......so why is everyone always saying basically if you dont have a 330i dont bother modifying?

Can the crank be balanced?

Maybe send Moranor a pm concerning the crank issue - is it only a balance issue ? What did bmwsa do to the gropu N ( production cars ) they raced here? I am sure the guys used 6000 revs on track regularly .
The standard 330i has more torque , You can get a 328i motor to 170/180 kw but torque for overtaking will not exceed the 330i .

Maybe find out from Van Der linde cams about Schrick profiles , I know they do some good cams also at a price though .

There is no replacement for displacement! Do the 3.0lt upgrade and still get the fuel figures you get now, you won't be sorry.

Does the 3 litre M54 have a crank problem when revved ?
Yes the displacement gives torque which means not having to rev to the limiter , but this is a bm inline 6 , it is going to be revved .....the sound is addictive :thumbs:

there is a vibration damper for $700 to fix the vibration issue on the 3l crank :) and modifications to the oil pump to stop it from falling off...

put the 330i cam on the 2.8l slightly less power but way cheaper than fixing the vibration issue on the 3l...

I think you should speak to the Van der Lindes or to Roger Taylor.

Both has extensive knowledge and experience when it come to tuning BMW's. They'll give you good advice.
