A lot of the journos are recommending the 320d over the more powerful (and as torqueful), yet identically priced, 330i.

Has anyone here driven both cars?
What is the real world performance difference?

My mother has the LCI F30 320d and my father has the 328i Pre-LCI F30 and the two cars are worlds apart. The 328i runs circles around the 320d from start to finish and I have also benchmarked the 328i against a f30 330d with sports auto box and the 328i beat it every time(except when doing rolling runs from +-50kph).

So I reckon with the new 330i vs 320d the outcome would be more or less the same. If you want performance within a reasonable budget buy the 330i,if you want great fuel consumption with fairly decent performance buy the 320d.

Thanks for the feedback.
The G20 320d has a brand new 20d motor. Even though outputs are the same as before, it has two turbos to reduce lag and improve responsiveness.

The 330i also has a new motor that is actually another 10kw and 30nm stronger than the 328i,so I really don't see the outcome being different in any way. But the new 320d just has an extra turbo AFAIK,it still uses the B47 motor.

You simply cannot compare the 2. The 330i is a closer competitor to the 330d.

Exactly:thumbs: If I were in the position of buying a G20 I wouldn't even consider a 320d at that price point when comparing it to a 330i.

I think the 330i is well priced compared to the 320d considering the power gap.

Wow , 2 turbos on the 320d ?? Is that true because I would assume the 320d motor would have been just an evolution over the f30 one to bring emissions down mostly coz its such a brilliant motor. If it does have 2 turbos I feel sorry for the 330i once the tuners start to mod, but the 330i at the same price is certainly a performance bargain

AFAIK they have actually gone twin turbo with it to broaden the torque band. The 320d in stock form is MILES off of the 330i's performance, especially after 100kph,so the tuners would definitely have their work cut out for them, but I reckon a SW,DP 320d with some minor hardware mods should probably be able to keep up with a stock 330i.

I personally don't think the 320d and 330i were ever meant to compete agains each other performance wise. The 330d vs 330i is a much closer comparison in terms or performance -as Yush said and it takes quite a few mods to get a 320d up to stock 330d form.

The 320d would be the sensible choice for daily commuting and 330i for performance and acceleration, from my experience with BMW you cannot compare the petrol consumption to diesel, diesel will win everyday.

We actually busy with our own article about the car and will publish it here, what do you guys think of the price? R650k...puts you in a league of your own if you can afford this car with no residual/balloon payment or any guaranteed future value deal.

The F30 is still very accessible price wise and will take a depreciation dip now with the new G20 model being out, I think now is the perfect time to be in the market for a good F30.
