BMW 650i LCI - E63 Coupe

Thanks bud, its a partial drain as I have a tool that can suck out fluids from the reservoir and the pipes, then filled up again.

Appreciate the feedback.

Sad to see you sell the M6.

Ah ok great, yea that method is pretty goot, else jack the front up, pull out the fluid with the syringe, fill up new, then turn the wheels lock to lock a few times to cycle the fluid, then drain with syringe and refill, keep doing till its clean oil.
Yea sad also, where you around? if you in jhb must do a drive sometime, @Bugger is also keen on a haarties drive on a sunday maybe.

So, what have we been up to……….,A bit of maintenance:

1. Shocks, front and back
2. Control arms (front)
3. Waterpump and Thermostat
4. Had to redo coolant.
5. Discs and Pads all round.
6. New Michelin rubber

Shout out to Deago at ABM, sorted me out for some of the items including the Michelin Pilot Sport 4’s. His price was R800 cheaper per tyre than Errols, Black Circles, etc etc.

Referring to a post by Mr Y (on the Z4), these old cars maintenance costs can easily get out of hand. The plus side is lower acquisition costs versus the newer offerings.

So, to keep costs within reason, I opted for Bilstein shocks. researched the B6 up to the yingyang as it was my first choice, the more I researched, I realised that the B4 will be perfect for my needs. If I had a bit more cash, would have probably gone for Koni actives.

Water-pump and Thermostat, are non-negotiable items for me, to give a sense, in one of my e46’s, back end of 2022, I had a water-pump changed by my mechanic - he used an aftermarket part (i couldn’t find the brand name), well, he swears he has never had a come back or failure on it.
f02e51568e1afc22b4e4f3d5067c7285.jpg

Fast forward, I ordered replacement parts from ABM and did a DIY job on it, touch wood, no issues. Id rather spend more and have it last 15-18 years like the original ones pulled out the cars.

What was irritating about the above situation is the water pump failure costed me a new top hose (and remember I had paid labour etc). Anyways, lessons learnt, for the Great White Shark, opted for Genuine BMW parts, supplied by Deago from ABM, rather do it right the first time. Also went with BMW Coolant (convenience reasons).
450a3ca0d32dcb4f65f0aac96a4b1a79.jpg

On the discs, trying out Zimmerman, it was sourced from GW. So far, online reviews are good. Rated as OEM parts for many car manufacturers. Time will tell. Interesting, I had genuine bmw discs and ATE pads yet a squeal (hence replaced them before end of life). Was embarrassing.

What got me more excited are the tyres. I have spent more than a month reading about tyres, if I had non run flats, I was going to go with Continental Contact Sport 7. Extremely good tyre based on varied sources, different from prior Conti offerings (ie not the same as CCS 5). Tried to ditch run-flats and source a spare wheel then I thought of a tyre change in some dark road in SA, not worth the risk.

Kept run-flats, chose Michelin Pilot Sport as they are a very very good tyre. Almost every site ranks them in their top 3. I had been using Goodyears F1 upfront and Dunlops at the back, what a difference this has made. Still yet to bed down but I am impressed by how quiet the tyres are, more comfortable (wasn’t expecting that) and overall better handling and grip.

d7abaddfaff56063d10d569c0383c757.jpg

More pics of the car will follow soon.

Still lots to be done…..all in good time (the parts of this car are on average 3 to 4 times that of e46, so have to pace myself here).

PG Glass appointment set for a tint, the non tinted windows are terrible in our sunny weather.

Leatherboyz appointment set to take care of the steering wheel and see if they can do the plastic trims for me?

In the meantime, its DIY dates ….to keep me out of trouble.

Thanks for reading.

Welcome your input and suggestions.

Very nice shopping list man.
I can't argue the use of the Bilstein B4, I've used them as replacements for my ex E92 335i, ex Opel Astra Coupe, and ex Opel Calibra. Honestly such a great piece of equipment.
Look forward to the diy updates

That's a great write up, glad to see these E63's being kept on the road. A mint one drove past me the other morning, they have aged rather well haven't they?

Tyres, that's a good amount of info, and glad ABM came through for you, Deago is really goood. As a matter of interest, I had to replace a front tyre on my car this past week, thanks to some trench in a road that hadn't been filled properly. Searched online (Goodyear Excellence RFT 245/40/20) and average price was about R5500, all the way up to about R6500. Minty's in Cresta sorted me for R4300 fitted and balanced, was very happy. Definitely going back to Michelin though when tyres are due.

Update

As with most repair jobs, there is bound to be a scope creep due to things being uncovered in the repair process. e.g. The replacement of control arms led to replacement of stabilizer links. Etc etc etc.

Things done to date (some mentioned in earlier post).

1. Shocks front and back: makes a huge difference, I installed them in parts to test effectiveness (fronts were done first, then later the rear ones, one could feel the difference on speed humps, the rear had harshness and was bouncy)

2. Control arms and stabilizer links: much better handling and increased cornering confidence. Way less body roll which I think positively impacted by shocks as well.

3. New discs and Pads, all round: This is a pet peeve (squealing brakes). Had to change the prior brake pads before they were finished. Glad those sounds are gone, gone. Had an issue with GW sensors, reverted to BMW sensors). Problems went away.

33a7699dc65d8b6dfa05e095c4898a97.jpg

4. Water Pump and Thermostat: School boy error on this one. Had not taken note that this car has an oil temp instead of coolant, thought it takes forever (10-15 minutes) to warm up meanwhile was comparing non-comparable (E46 coolant temp vs this car's oil temp). Coolant warms up quicker (less than 5 minutes) than oil. Anyways its a key preventative maintenance item this not a waste of money. BTW, BMW gives you back some cash when you return your old Water-pump, don’t throw it away.

5. Crankcase Breather pipe: The car had a higher-than-normal V8 beat, upon investigation, the previous owner had put together the torn breather pipe with lots of masking tape which ended up leaking. Can't blame him, BMW wants R2.5k for a “pipe”. Got one from BMW Midrand that comes with oil separator for ease of installation (plug and play).
f8568425212c832e8d480be2b920ccfe.jpg

6. The car used to get super-hot (like a sauna) after a short parking period in open parking. Going to shopping areas with no undercover parking was not great. Did a Smash & Grab tint at PG Glass, their pricing was very good. I went with a 35% tint to keep it “factory” like tint, car is much cooler now, better sun protection.

7. The tyres were 8 years old, fronts were pathetically worn-out (as in wouldn’t pass Roadworthy test). Researched quite a bit and settled on Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. These tyres compliment work done on the suspension, it now feels like its on rails. More traction when putting power down.

8. My steering wheel had scarfs and marks (it's a 15-year-old car), it wasn’t too bad but its something I thought should be done. Leatherboyz did their magic. The tri-stitching came out tops, though that sort of highlights the worn soft touch plastics, which are on the to do list.

b3b73b871c0f251ef18765fc21764fcf.jpg

9. Driver’s Bolster side had faded. Whilst Leatherboyz were busy with steering, asked then to re-dye the leather. “Sorry, we don’t do dye here, we replace” so they said. I obliged, their work is good, still hasn’t blended yet ( they said I must give it time, will blend in).
f15c53e0e86ef828d68c84addfdf8f76.jpg

5bd1b58151e4ccc32d42d8711f3915d2.jpg

10. Bulbs: Right low beam died, then replaced with a Philips D1S, wrong, car came with Osram D1S, so will be putting the Philips up for sale. In the meantime, awaiting the Laser Led light bulbs to improve illumination. Will give more feedback once installed. Took the liberty of also ordering angel eye globes, fog lights etc.

11. Car had a valet done (mild detailing). Did it before most of the above work, will need to go back there again. talk about putting the cart before the horse.

12: Exhaust work: This brings the thrills of driving the car, did the mid-pipe to back section and kept the cats etc. as is. did not want engine problems by tampering with O2 sensors, cats, putting in cat foolers (asked Peter for advice, thank you Peter). I typically keep the exhaust as it was from factory, but I must say I am smiling like a hotel cat from this mod.

Things, that I still need to get to:

13. Upper coolant hose: After installing new water-pump and thermostat, noticed small drops of coolant on the floor. Issue I didn’t notice before. Upon closer inspection, there is some build up on the upper hose. So, have to do this asap (should have done it same time with water pump change). Each time I check coolant level in the morning, it is still “full”, so means not much being lost.

14. Bumper realignment: it looks like the bumper once hooked onto pavement (driver tried to reverse thus was pulled out, suspect the previous owner just pushed it back into place and left it at that). Not neatly done. Hoping this can be done without wanting to “respray” it.

15. Soft close on drivers' door has intermittent issues. Will sort out at some point.

16. Soft touch plastics needs either to be redone or replaced. BMW Sells the entire window switch and panel, I just want the covering panel, so will have to have it done at some point.

I didn’t repost pictures that were posted in prior posts. will post recent pics of the car post tint (haven’t full car pics since been working on it)

As the saying goes: Rome was not built in one day, going to take it one day, at a time. have done enough to enjoy the car for a while.

Thanks for reading.

Very good update, I see she kept you busy over the long weekend.

You seem to rate Leatherboyz very highly, I have found it impossible to get hold of them to recover my steering wheel...

Update:

Not much has been attended to ito the official outstanding list.

What was done since the last update.

1. Brake Fluid service light popped up; was seriously thinking of taking the car to the BMW dealership for this service as its typically cheap. Then thought of the horror stories posted of late (what if they just reset the service indicator without changing the fluid?).

Anyways, the work started. A bit of diy admin (take off the wheel, open the brake fluid line, pump old fluid out, keep checking that the reservoir is always filled up to avoid air bubbles into system, pump out old fluid till till new brake fluid comes through, close brake fluid line, wheel back on, all this times 4, starting with the furthest wheel from the reservoir).

This helped with initial reservoir draining
c790781078ccc431fa5f5077c0f8cea4.jpg

Key to note, the rear callipers use a smaller size spanner (9) vs the front callipers (11).

The colour of the fluid was dark, so definitely made the right call to change the brake fluid.

Herewith the old brake fluid

Bimmer Link came in handy for a quick reset

2. Since the front wheels were off, took liberty and changed the front globes (awkward design for headlight bulb changes). I opted for LED. The fog lights threw an error message which was resolved by activating the “LED conversion” via coding.

The light output is great, and the colour as well. The car came with the orangish, yellowish angel eyes. Those were updated as well to LED, I am not 100% happy with the uniformity (inner ring where the bulb goes is brighter than outer ring, saw in various posts including here that its common).

3. Previous wipers were starting to miss spots (lines). New ones installed below
da0242dbf89e749c1c13b1ef2f9ace3d.jpg

4. I did a gearbox oil change, but the random hesitation was still there (when cold). On reading about this, it is a common thing on DCT, but my car despite the DCT lever, it’s the ZF 6HP26), not supposed to do that. I still need to do a proper ZF service but for now did a XHP gearbox flash. The hesitation is gone. Much smoother changes.
ea901c496d4cd8207ced2679c8720601.jpg

5. Door hinge realignment for the soft close, the door is no longer opening itself after being closed.

Issues that still needs attention:
Coolant Top hose leaves small drops of coolant on the floor. I have been monitoring the coolant level since and it remains at max level after two weeks monitoring.

After spirited driving today, there seem to be a whine in the engine bay….sounds like it might be of the pulleys, will take more time to assess, welcome your feedback on this.

I must say, I am impressed with the cornering capabilities of this car, despite the size. I have been pushing it hard (to assess next diy, what to fix / repair), really impressed with the handling characteristics, I suspect Michelin PS4 tyres, New Shocks and Control arms have a role to play. Happy!

Its been a bliss putting on 7000kms in the past 5 months. Two thirds being long distance trips to KZN and a few trips to PTA.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for all the help along the way.

Very nice work Vince.

With regards tot he Door Hinge realignment, what did you do? just adjust the Striker plate? or the actual hinge? keen to chat about this, as i think the same needs to be done on my drivers door.

Small Update:

Very happy with the way the car sounds, with the odd exhaust crackles. (No Pops & Bangs). Captured too on the BP garage exit (at the last Breakfast Run).

Fixes:
Steering trim
Wanted to address the notorious BMW soft texture peel off. I started with respraying the current trim. It came out okay, per below
4c786182853cd6a444b299231881cb32.jpg

The perfectionist in me won this internal argument, so ordered a new trim set from ABM, Deago came to the party.

See the differences below, especially around the M logo

Finally happy with the steering progress. I left the top right buttons trim undone for now (which I might do next, will see).

AUC Sensor
Ran diagnostics a few times (cleared errors and rerun), the AUC sensor keeps popping up. Replaced old one with new from BMW.
d269b3680471f4cc21b9b463e2bbaa7c.jpg

Xenon light level sensor
Interestingly, the lights level was fine though this was broken. This sits on the front right control arm. Anyways, replaced the broken one with a new one from BMW.
0685e2c27854343735a47992dd46b106.jpg

Bluetooth
I had forgotten to update on this. Maybe listening to music easier, the bluetooth connection is super strong, can play clearly with the phone anywhere in car. Also, has a sleep functionality, to save on battery. Its automatic link, connection each time I get into the car (seamless). Only issue is that you can’t see track info on Car screen (only shows “Aux”. You have to change albums on phone. Luckily, I play my own playlists (which are long enough for trips).
10761c4774ec65effcd434fb6f92a8f8.jpg

Carbon Mirror Caps
Toying around with the carbon mod. wrapped the side trim in carbon and put on Carbon mirrors. It's an easy mod to reverse if I end up not liking it. Don’t have a day pic, will take soon. Please let me have your views
17a761ccaf456d4e26e267f077d9b082.jpg

Still have these pending:
Upper coolant hose
: A new one has been ordered (arm and leg) from BMW. Should arrive this week. My coolant level remains intact just don't want to irritate folks I am visiting with my car leaving coolant on their pavement as I see small drops in the garage. Not urgent but will sort it out soon.

Bumper realignment: It looks like the bumper once hooked onto pavement (driver tried to reverse thus was pulled out, suspect the previous owner just pushed it back into place and left it at that). Not neatly done. Also not urgent but would be nice to get to this.
