523i E60 Idling issue

Hello friends.

I have 523i N52 engine. 2008

Please help if someone has come across this.

The problem I have is when I’m driving in traffic or coming up to a stop I notice the idling changes and sounds as if the car will switch off, this happens for a brief moment and goes back to normal. At the same time the l/100km needle jumps around like crazy before settling down. The rpms are constant at around 6 or 700 (estimate)

When I am on highway everything is fine, but my fuel consumption has gone up over the last few months ever since I started to notice this problem.

The other problem is sometimes the car struggles to start, I have press engine start a few times. I am getting worried now because it’s happening more frequently than before.

I am not sure where to start as it could get very costly if I don’t get to the root cause.

Initially I thought it could be fuel pump & filter but recently someone told me it might me related to air leak or something like that.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can start looking? I would really appreciate your insight.

I am waiting for my obd2 scanner which I’ve orders to see if it pick any codes.

Thanks in advance!

Could be the solenoid valves which are situated towards the front of the engine and easily removed and cleaned. Two of them. They sit iirc just above the top pulley slightly to the left and have wires leading to them. They are fastened with one or two 10mm bolts. Remove the bolts and pull them out. I left the ones i worked on overnight in petrol. Clean them and see if the problem persists.
