Before I go on about my recklessness................

ZF SPECIAL UP TO END NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6HP service is R4700 ex vat

8HP service is R5700 ex vat
Ok back to my bad behavior: :ROFLMAO:

Been putting off the ZF visit for some time but wasn't using car much, decided to stop for a checkup today, they were busy but the lady asked me to please wait for 30 minutes to do a check and book it in another time.

Ended up doing a kinda partial service, pan was indeed leaking slowly but there was only around 3.5L oil in it!

Thankfully upon inspection, there was no damage at all, so had the one sleeve replaced along with pan, filter but not all new oil.

Whatever oil was left was squeaky clean and due to the diagnostics, tech didn't want to do a full service until the adaptations come back to a decent spec so I will visit them again in a few weeks to do a full oil and filter replacement and labour only as I already have a new pan.

Dodged a bullet there, lucky everything was fine mechanically, I am to just drive around normally for a while to see if the values come down to a more decent level.

Learnt alot from the tech, showed me everything from how the box works to the solenoid conditions and explained everything so nicely. I had an aftermarket pan in there and could clearly see the difference with the original one, and he also showed me the difference with the seals on that sleeve he replaced for me.

Ended up paying just about R3900 and will probably be around R1500 to R1800 next month when I take it for another checkup.

Here are some pics for those who have not seen what it looks like:

1. Can see where the leak was coming from, tech says it was from the sleeve and also from the pan on the one side.
2. If you zoom in on the two pans, you can see the ridges on the original one are higher where the bolts go, and on the right is the aftermarket one which is basically flat on the pan.
Mind my feet, I have toes in different area codes :ROFLMAO:
3. Difference with the seals (orange one is old, black one new)
4. No filings or any metal in the pan so tech says the gearbox is 100%
5. Says adaptations are way out, wants to see if they stabalize after this and I should go back in a few weeks to check. If all good, will just complete the rest of the service and if not, they will quote on a rebuild but he seems quite optimistic.

Hello fellow beemer boffs

Against what most have advised, I had nothing to lose so I decided to flash a stage 3 xhp file with some minor tweaks, reset adaptations and drove in manual mode for around 600km so far, mixed highway and sandton area.

XHP Settings:
Reduced torque to 400nm across all gears
Shiftmap Editor: +5% in upshifts and downshifts (mainly cos I know it is so lazy to shift when disabled)
Kickdown disabled
Line pressure bump disabled
Forced takeoff in 1st

Tried my best to use the zf adaptation procedures for the box to learn again.

With these settings, my adaptations peaked at 423mbar for clutch A (this one was in question due to 2nd and 3rd slipping a bit at low rpm)

It was a bit of a rough 2 weeks in manual mode with some uncomfy jerking, some double jerking 4th to 5th but it has paid off.

I now am running it as is with torque adjustments set for each gear:

450nm in 1
550nm in 2
650nm 3rd to 5th
600nm in 6th

Clutch A shot up to around 690mbar after this and after 2 days, it seems to have settled on 670mbar.

Swapped to D mode and shifts are crisp, eager and getting softer with each drive I do, mostly 50 to 60% throttle, no wot just yet.

The key thing here is the slipping is gone completely, where zf told me it wont stop slipping and a rebuild is best, this was in November after the service.

The only stubborn clutch seemed to be clutch E, but it now is adjusting fill times so i think i will have a decent value on that again after a few more drives.

It appears that the car had become software stubborn and refused to budge until I did this whole relearn process.

After alot of running around, searching through posts and reading up on these gearboxes, I am at peace to say that I have saved myself on a gearbox replacement or a recon quote of R59 000 from ZF to rebuild. (They said box is stuffed and clutches are cooked.)

Will continue as it is to see how the adaptation values settle in after a few weeks then I am going back to stage 2 since I am quite confident that I have zero mechanical issues.

If anyone has any info/questions please feel free to chat, It has been a long but rewarding road, almost sold the car when warranty said they wouldn't pay for the rebuild but it's back in action, no issues at all!
