discussion All terrain tyres

Hi Guys,

For those of you who may have tried all terrains on an Xdrive X3(G01)
I'm considering swopping my Pirellis(P7) out for some all terrains as we are planning a lot more light dirt road trips in the future and the runflats are awful on anything other than normal roads. I've had non run-flats on my previous X3 and the ride was considerably better but this time I'm thinking of something slightly more offroad focussed.(Planning on a roofrack with some spot lights too)

I have style 691 19" rims at the moment and wonder if there are any recommendations for tyres that would fit these? From what I can gather there are no exact size matches to my current tyres(245/50/r19) in all terrain form. I'm a bit confused on options. What kind of tolerance do I have for width and ratio on these without affecting steering/xdrive? Would it be better to go for other rims aswell?

My Pirellis are still in really good shape so I would likely keep them at this point and perhaps do swops for holidays.

Thanks!

Easier to probably get 18" rims and then ATs for that, most likely have more tyre options also

Then you can keep your 19s and it will be easier to change the wheels yourself instead of having to go to tyre shop to do the change, waiting the 2 hours or whatever there....

Whatever you do, just make sure you have a maximum tolerance across front and rears of 1% or less. Or your transver case is going to shudder and you will hate your life.

Yeah, will do.

The plan is to keep the exact same overall diamterter of the stock wheels

@Stephan22411 does your car have M Sport suspension or standard suspension?

I have Standard suspension and the car does have a slight floaty ride when tackling road undulations.

I figure with M Sport suspension, there may be less give/rebound, but not sure if that would be good for off-roading?

Just ensure that you get a matching spare as well, if you're venturing off the beaten track.

Standard suspension. I really just can't stand the runflats on dirt roads, not planning on anything crazy just want more versatile tires. The closest I've found are 255/50/r19(General Grabbers AT3) vs OEM 245/50/r19. I've seen loads of posts online of people fitting these without any issues as the arches are actually really deep and the extra 10mm width doesn't make contact anywhere. Just need to have a chat with insurance about it first. If too many issues then I might opt for 18" rims instead as they have waaaaaay more tire options.

Hi bud

I have 17inch Falken Wildpeak Trail all terrain tyres on my F25. Brilliant tyre! Absolutely smooth with no noise and pretty strong sidewalls as I have endured a few potholes in the Berg etc. with no issues.

Check if the Wildpeaks are available in your size.

Nice, thanks man, I had a look and unfortunately they only have them in sizes that would drastically change my overall diamater, heard theyre great tires though.

Went to a shop today, these definitely look like the best option. Unfortunately not available in my rim size so I would have to get some 18 inch rims.
Interestingly, the cost of 4x Wilpeaks AND 4 new 18 inch rims(A-line) is prettymuch the same as just a new set of Perellis that I have now. Might just do an early tyre swop and get it done with.
Very tricky to find nice rims for 5/112 bolt diameter though.

Have a look at my old thread here:

Unfortunately these were sold but if you find a set of G20 18s they will work nicely as per the pics I posted.

Hi Guys,

So just as an update to this for future reference if anyone has the same idea.

I went to a few tyre shops to get some insights and physically inspect the different options, tolerances, etc. These A/T tyres are VERY different in person. They look fine on images but once you see some of them in person you can just smell your diffs burning.

Getting 18 inch rims opens the door to quite a few more options but I wanted to see if I could avoid that for obvious reasons.

I also wanted to avoid going too far out of spec so as to not put any unecessary stress on my drivetrain, brakes, handling, etc.

Compatible options were:

1. Falken Wildpeak AT3W = Waaay too beefy and heavy, would have a heavy impact on power and fuel consumption, not a perfect compatible fit either(would be wider, taller and heavier than spec), could perhaps be considered with a 30d.

2. General Grabber AT3 = Same as the above, apparently a bit noisy aswell.

3. Yokohama Geolander = Again, these things are for cruisers and the like and apparently don't do well on normal roads(in BMW terms).

4. Falken A/T Trails = Perfect blend of onroad/offroad. very high speed rating(V), less aggressive tread pattern but seems very capable and everyone I spoke to raves about them. Elussive with sizes, lol

The Falken A/T trails are hands down the winner for me, link below:
https://www.falkentire.com/wildpeak/attrail

My OEM specs are:

Tyres: 245/50/r19(There are no A/T tyres for this size AT ALL, anywhere on earth)
Rims: 19"/7.5j/5x112/et32

Chosen spec:
Tyres: 225/55/r19
Rims: Same rims!

This prettymuch maintains the OEM circumference (3mm taller) so won't cause speedo errors, etc.

Another option was 235/50/r19 which Falken does make but they are not imported to S.A at all.
The 7.5j width of my rims are perfect for 225s aswell and they won't bulge as much as my OEM tyres do. So I should get an overall flatter side profile.

These tyres are fairly beefy and likely a bit heavier than Pirellis, etc so it makes sense to narrow them down a bit in anyway and the 235/55/r19 has a 10+mm height difference

Price wise, a full set goes for around 12-13k fitted, aligned, etc. which is HALF the price of the Pirelli P7s I have.

The plan is to paint my rims matte black(i know, i know but I think the slightly offroady look justifies it) and then install a roofrack(potentially with a light bar and other minor accessories in the future)so that I can mount a spare and some luggage when we go on trips. I have wide wooden beams and good roof clearance in my garage so I can potentially set it up as a drop and go type of jobby.

stipulation by your insurance is that your car must be roadworthy, and roadworthy states not overly worn and some obvious defects. dumping RFT's wouldnt be an issue.

I also went to larger tyres with my F25 and will soon also do on the G01. But I wouldnt do AT3 tyres, unless you really are going to do A LOT of gravel. AT3 tyres will be noisy and chow fuel consumption and also have a harder ride, possibly taking you back to same levels as your RFT's.

Your only benefit with AT3s is grip with 4x4 extreme tracks and puncture resistance, so learn how to plug a tyre and take a tyre plug kit along.

Dumping the 19inch rims for 18s and going up with 2 profiles on my MSport F25 was the only way that car was drivable on our bad roads. I also drove it at 1.7bar, another huge improvement in ride.

Yeah, not looking at AT3s, the A/T trail from Falken is a far less aggressive pattern intended for mixed use.

I hear you on insurance, have spoken to them about the tyres and they don't have an issue.

Really just looking for an improvement on the odd gravel road. If I want to delve deeper into the 4x4 world, I'll just get a bakkie.
