Damn!
How much did it set you back if I may ask?

Transfer case oil change (only applies to Xdrive models) is cheap at R600. I would highly recommend this for anyone that has an Xdrive vehicle as my old oil was filthy.

The gearbox oil change is pricey at R5.8k (non-special price) but its only really done on average every 100k km, so I would recommend it to keep the gearbox in good health. A rebuild is close on to R65k give or take for ZF8, based on current pricing - you can decide if R5.8k is palatable for peace of mind or if you'd rather chance a rebuild at some point in the future.. It is NOT lifetime oil, mine was changed at 85k and 20k later, it has already started looking dirty.

Last I hear +- R6k and that is too much honestly. I can have an oil change service and brake fluid service done at ABM for half that price.

I understand, but how does that help your gearbox..?

Also its R2k more than the 'special' price so I battle to follow the logic.

One needs to factor that the cost of the parts (sump + oil) has gone up, approximately R4.5k just in parts.
So R6k at ZF is not an exorbitant price imo.

yes its no special, but it is what it is.

would much rather spend 6k, as opposed to 50 odd on a rebuild.

can the service kits be bought from ZF? any online shops?

Anyone have links to good discussions on DIY servicing your gearbox? I have high mileage and unknown service history, many say then to rather leave it be, but I would like to at least take out some of the old oil and top up. Dilute it, better than doing nothing

What I would suggest you do is call ZF and tell them what your mileage is. They'll ask you to come through and will check your oil for free to determine if they can service the gearbox and outline any risks. If they confirm that they can safely service your gearbox you can make a booking with them. They are extremely helpful and offer great service. They will also change your diff oil for free if you supply them with the oil when you do your gearbox service

I have been quoted R4,200 plus VAT for my six speed, which has 184k km on the clock. Have a booking at ZF Cape Town mid Jan. They will asses before proceeding, so fingers crossed. I am rather baffled that SMG advise no need to service yet manufacturer says every 100k km... Let's see what happens when they get thier hands on her. Better safe than sorry. Downpipe, swirl flaps and egr are next

ZF have also offered to sell me the service kit and I can take it to an indy, so all that will be saved is the labor and is that really so significant?

I am going the ZF route

Closest ZF to me is 700km.
One day of leave = R2k.

No one tried DIY on the forum yet?
I would like to know if there may be problematic air bubbles if I was just to drain oil and top up.

There is a service garage in ballito, kzn whom is a ZF agent. I spoke to him last year and he confirmed when I am ready for my service I must give him a shout.

700km sounds like you in kzn too
