Jump starter for my F30 340i

I have a 340i that has been parked for 9 months now and has not been switched on at all. As I result I will need to get the car on using a jump starter. Can anyone suggest a jump starter that will work and won’t mess with anything? I found a Gizzu Jump Starter 10400mAh on Takealot but I don’t want to take chances not knowing how doing this affects the computer. Please advice. Thank you in advance.

Hi bud

If the vehicle is still under motorplan get BMW on call to come out and jump it. If not, get insurance roadside assistance to do so instead of spending money on a jump starter to use once.

Once started drive straight to get the battery replaced and thereafter coded as I doubt the existing battery will be fine after 9 months.

If you plan on having the car parked for long periods of time going forward contact @deago.parts@abmbmw at BMW Midrand for a battery charger that you can leave plugged on to safely keep the vehicle charged.

Thank you so much for the response.

I can't do any of those at the moment as the car had an accident (long story short lost the case to insurance). I am simply trying to get the car intro neutral so that the bodyshop is able to come get the car so I need to get the ignition on. So wanted to find a solution easy enough to work with. Also have another car which is an old one W210 that I don't drive much so it would be useful for that one too.

manually release the gearbox so you can push it. There is a screw or nut that you can loosen under the gearbox so it disengages the gearbox.

I actually just got one of these gizzus last week. About a month ago my car wouldnt start. Same time we got the last cold spell. I locked the car by mistake so the boot locked and when I tried agaithe next day the battery didn't have enough power to unlock.

My neighbour had one of these jump starter things (not as nice as the gizzu - cheaper Chinese version) and I hooked it up to the terminals in the engine bay which allowed me to open the boot etc to change the battery.

Much easier than contorting oneself to get to the manual release on the inside. I'm.positive the gizzu will start my car with no issue (330d) as it seems a much better piece of kit than the Chinese one. It also charges via USB c which is handy.

After charging the battery with my optimate for a few days it's working fine again for the last 3 weeks.

Thank you so much for the responses on this one. Extremely helpful. I did think about trying to get down and dirty to manually release the gearbox but I also want to go through the faults before taking the car to the body shop and ensure I know what could be wrong with the car before they start and don't charge me for unnecessary things. But glad to know I can manually release the gearbox but also use the Gizzu too.

Sorry bud I didn't realise. Jump starter would be the way to go in that case and the Gizzu is perfect for your application! Good luck with the repair and please do post some pics once the car is done!

Hi.

did you sort out the wiring to the battery, When BMW's are involved in accidents it snaps off the cable that gives the car power from the battery, also check that. not sure if they still put the small box near the battery with newer cars ...

So I bought the little Gizmo thing. Turns out my batter is giving me a 14v which I assume means the battery is actually fine. However as you have pointed out, the curtain airbags actually deployed so the cable should be disconnected. Do you possibly know how I could have a temporary solve to at least get the console on. I am not even getting power for the gauge cluster to go on. I assume it is that but not sure.

Thank you for the help. Will definitely put up pics once the car is all done and as it goes through the repair process.

The jumper points in the engine bay should give power to car?

Not sure if it will help, but maybe disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected. On the E8x and E9x if the battery is completely dead, it releases the solenoid the holds the shifter in park with the engine off.

Maybe the same mechanism is in use in the F-series, worth a shot.

Thanks for sharing. Will give it a shot tomorrow and provide feedback.
Great news. It worked. Sort of. So I did the temporary fix and now I'm getting power into the car. But the dash just flashes on and off. Seems like the Gizzu power going in is not stable as it keeps switching better 15.7s and 16v. Does this 4x then switches off completely.

It's progress, but short lived.
