For technical midgets like me can you give a brief overview of what this does and the benefits / downsides.

If my car has been "mapped" does a gearbox flash have any impact on the mapping?

Cheers

XHP gearbox flashes are designed to give you better performance from your 6 speed or 8 speed auto box.

App Main features:
Ability to flash your transmission controller (TCU) on your BMW with custom files.
The flash method is 100% safe. The TCU can always be restored to a working state, even if the cable get's pulled during a flash procedure.
Read/Delete TCU trouble codes (free)
Backup your TCU and restore to stock at any time you want
Choose from pre-defined maps in the xHP InApp-Store and customize them further with our powerful in-app Editor functions!
Switch between maps in 2 minutes.

OTS Maps will of course have different setups, depending on the vehicle, but in general they will share the following features:

Stage 1 Setup:
Optimized D Shiftpoints to facilitate sporty, yet economy style driving
Optimized Shift Strategy for up/downhill driving
Optimized Warmup Behaviour
Optimized Torque Converter Lockup in 1st/2nd/3rd gear
Lowered minimum RPM limit manual mode
Adapted Torque Limits for Tuned engines
Start in 1st Gear in Manual Mode
Gear Display in Dash in D/S/M Modes

Stage 2 Setup:
Optimized D & S Shiftpoints for better acceleration in part and full throttle situations
25% faster, firmer, sportier upshifts in D/S/M mode
Faster paddle response time
Optimized Shift Strategy for up/downhill driving
Optimized Warmup Behaviour
Optimized Torque Converter Lockup in 1st/2nd/3rd gear
Raised Torque Limits for Tuned engines
Start in 1st Gear in Manual Mode
Gear Display in Dash in D/S/M Modes

Stage 3 setup:
Optimized D & S Shiftpoints for better acceleration in part and full throttle situations
25% faster shifts in D mode
50% faster & very firm upshifts in S/M Mode
Instant paddle response time
Removed Rev - Limiters in M (True Manual Mode)
Race-like rev-match Downshifts (Throttle Blip) first time ever on Diesel BMWs
Optimized Shift Strategy for up/downhill driving
Optimized Warmup Behaviour

This is a must have on any modded car with the zf8

Even on 6HP, best mod I've done in a long time.

Interested to know what differences have you noticed?

6HP user here, i had this done in last week (2000km ago) and this is what I have seen with the Stage 3 flash:

D: Car is always in the right gear at the right time, I hardly intervene. You ask and it gives.

S: Very quick shifts, feels faster than manual mode to be honest. The rev matching is why i went stage 3 and S mode changes the dynamic of the car.

M: Also very quick, does what it says on the tin and with the paddles, always fun.

I was concerned that D would be too harsh for daily duty, but it is very good. This is honestly how the car should have come from factory.

Danny@DSCmotorsport was very good at accomodating me and all the questions I had.

Yup I have experienced the same. Also found the lag has reduced noticeably on lower gears and the quicker changes have made it such a pleasure to drive.
I haven't driven it in a few months though as I'm out the country so eager to come back and be re-united once my quarantine period is over.

Also Danny needs to work a bit more magic on maintenance soon.

So to confirm, in D mode you can still take your grandma for a drive around town without her complaining about hard gear shifts? Still very smooth and comfortable?

How has this affected your fuel consumption, if at all? Particularly in D mode - as I imagine this to be the average mode for most on their everyday commute.

S & M more for when people want to have some fun or need to overtake.

In D mode, it's factory smooth. I would compare it to doing continuous throttle adaptations and having that crisp feel everytime you get into the car.

I can't tell you how it has affected my fuel consumption, I've got a very light foot regardless, having averaged around 8l/100km (as per OBC) before and after flash which is lower than I thought it would be for an N55.

The car does have a downpipe though.
