discussion X3 M40D reliability

Hi I hope everyone is well

A family member is looking to purchase a GO1 BMW X3 M40D

It has only a few months of motorplan left and has about 60 thousand kilometres on the odometer

He plans on keeping the car for the next four years and does around 15 thousand kilometres a year

Any input or advice regarding the reliability of the M40d will be appreciated

My recommendation will be to try and discount the price slightly and extend the motorplan for another 2years. Did so recently on my M340i - costed around R52k I think with no mileage added (just time)

That way they will piece of mind regardless at least for another two years

Very low mileage and thats been maintained by BMW, i dont see any reliability issues.
Just keep in mind the M tax on the bigger brakes that they comes with.

Either than that if its a happy car (check service history, if it has only done regular services and no other abnormal issues or fixes) it should be good for the next few years.

You don't mention the year model. Given its only got 60 000km its low mileage, but also means it was probably only serviced 3 times. given BMW service intervals. Go with what MoeM2 suggested and then service the car every 10 000km or less, even if he/she has to pay for the interim services.

Yep, solid advice about the service intervals.
The things that cause issues on these cars are as follows (non-exhaustive):

Diffs
Transfer Case
Turbo
EGR
DPF

If these are solid, and your diligence indicates youre okay (mechanically and electrically otherwise) negotiating the price down and extending the plan isnt a bad recommendation.

Yeah true, good advise above. I decent 30d and when more power is needed, get a file done...but personally i have not head of anyone with issues on the 40d locally atleast
