A 245/40 x 17 has a smaller diameter ( 627mm ) as against 644mm for the 235/45 x 17 , so your gearing will change about 2.6 % lower . The 255/40 x 17 is 633 mm diameter .
Normally rims accommodate a tyre one size wider , AFAIK the throwing stars fitted in SA were all narrows front and rear .

I'm pretty sure that's only for the 540i individuals. The M5 got wides at the back. :thumb:

I'm pretty sure Fordkoppie's car is the only one with wides on the rear, those narrow and wide throwing stars are EXTREMELY rare. I've only seen two sets in total.

The other set is on a 850Csi Manual.

Current tyres which were supposed to be temporary till I found I really like them.

Front 225/45/17
Rear 245/40/17

Doesnt look odd at all and the 40 profile gives nice handling, but now has me thinking about gearing

Jip. All of the SA M5s and 540iI had narrows all round.
When I got my ex black car, it had 245/40s all round and it actually looked really nice

Saw the car in the metal today and the black actually works pretty well with this colour, have to say I was bit sceptical at first.
