Rear brake sensors have not activated yet. Do they need replacing?

Hi,

I have a F20 120i 2017. The rear pads are almost finished but have not yet activated teh sensor. I am struggling to find stock of the sensor.

Can I replace the brake pads and leave the sensor intact or must the sensor be replaced even though it has not activated?

Chances are theres a break in the wire, you might have to trace it. On my E60, the wire got cut and never threw a permanent error (might have had an error if I scanned it though), the mileage on the OBC therefore didn't change. The sensor was wearing, but because the cable cut it didn;t read anything.

I might have not given enough information. The pads have not worn down enough yet to activate the sensor. When the car went for a service at BMW last week they said the brakes were almost finished and wanted to replace them. I said I would replace it myself.

So if the pads have not worn down yet to activate the sensor and I replace with new pads then I can just leave the old sensor in?

Yes you can reuse the old sensor provided it has not activated yet.

Ah ok, if they haven't worn down to the sensor as yet, why would you want to change them? BMW told me the same with the X1 some years ago, although it had just started to wear the sensor down. I got approximately another 15k km ( maybe more) before i changed them.
