We drive a 2013 X3 20d manual, it has the 6-speed manual box in. Yesterday all of the sudden I could not engage reverse gear. All other gears are fine but I cannot get the car in reverse, no matter what. If I "force" the lever a bit, I can hear gears grinding.
According to me it is a ZF manual gearbox (GS6X45DZ) , I did phone Nico at ZF and he says that Getrag took over the manual ZF boxes, and also that ZF in Germiston only works on the ZF auto boxes, so they can't assist. He suggested contacting Budler Motorsport, so will do that.
I tested by reving the car really high 3000 rpm+ and I could get the car in reverse gear 2 times out of 10 tries. So my thinking is that it is the Synchro on the reverse gear that is done for. I do see there is repair kits available in the UK for this gearbox reverse synchro, so it looks like a common issue.
