My search for a mint e36 M3 coupe

So recently I've become nostalgic and have been looking for a mint original e36 bmw m3 coupe with the German spec seats ... So 95 / 96 model. (Heck even an e30 BMW m3 although finding this would be like finding the holy grail )

My first love would be a Daytona violet with titan leather but honestly any colour would do. And everything must be original. Orange indicator lenses. Original bmw radio. No bloody boot spoiler (sies). The original Motorsport wheels etc

In school I always dreamt of owning a coupe. And tbh when I bought a the 4door m3 I still yearned for a 2 door

So recently I came across a black on black e36 m3 with the German spec seats and from the pics all original. Advertised with 135000km and no accidents ... Priced at twice the price of what one normally goes for. But heck I'm prepared to pay for an exceptional example. I made it clear to the owner I'm particular and anyone that knows me will tell you I'm a perfectionist of note

So the great trek to lenasia to go see this car. Went with a mech. Let's just say I did not even bother to go for a test drive. Entire car was sprayed (and a poor job to boot). All rubbers and window beadings needed replacing . The car has an oil leak on the head which the owner tried to mask by washing the engine bay. Starter was going ... Rust in the engine bay ... Etc

Now over and above the asking I was prepared to put in another 50-80k on the car to get it to concourse conditon. Things like rubbers etc I would overlook. A good detail will also cost ... I'd recondition the seats etc

I was disappointed and a little pissed to say the least because I was day dreaming of driving a black on black e36 M3 and those dreams were dashed :(. Wished the owner was a bit more honest regarding overall conditon ... Ah well ... So we continue

There is an Alpine white on Dove grey 3.0lt M3 for sale at that small 2nd hand dealer behind the Engen garage on Vermooten street Brackenhurst. They have a window sticker of 189k and the car has been sitting there for almost a year now. Saw it last year for Major, 180 000km, coisman report came back with 7 different owners on a so called one owner car and mileage recorded at over 300 000km at some stage of its life. Spare keys, all the books and pouch, interior and exterior was neat but the sound install in the boot was a put off as it looked like the previous owner trimmed it with smurf skin.

Jeepers ... Unsuspecting buyers could fall for sellers lies and cons. With cars like this you have to either know your stuff or know people that do so you don't get caught

Edit: maybe white on grey would be a combo I would not want

Even the colour didn't look like Alpine White III, had this like yellow tint to it

Adamr good luck they hard to find, I've gone through the process, my E36 still needs a bit of work!!

Even clean E46 M3s are flippen hard to find! My e46 is like worlds apart from the E36, granted it's 12 years younger

Thanks. Seen those two advertised ... The cabrio sparked my interest for a minute or so but then realised that it's a coupe I want (i know cabrios were full import and rare in sa and I'm pretty sure I've seen this same car at speedy car sales when I was like little for r400k ... Like decades back)

The yellow one ... I dunno something about it thats not giving me a hard on

People have very different misconceptions of what is a "Clean Car" .....even back when i bought my German Spec, it took me a while to find the right one and that was a decade ago.....just keep at it and hopefully the one that ticks all the boxes comes along your way.

Good luck with your search.

A good clean E36 coupe is hard to come by and when you do find one price will be fancy..
however there are a few clean 4 doors. which is not really relevant but it begs the question why so many coupes were neglected...

So the great trek to lenasia to go see this car.

I also drove out all the way to see that car, and its a hok:thumbdo:

lowered/collapsed front suspension
non vanos related rattle in the engine
AC compressor whined like a supercharger
wheel bolts missing
tear in the leather
thermostat broken
bad paint with fish eyes all over
according to its "service history" it only covered like 12k in the last 10 years.... yeah right :mmm:
the list just goes on and on..

I actually caught the guy still polishing it when I arrived:skit:

I have also learnt that most people's idea of clean/original/unmolested etc is completely different to mine.

Maybe they just have really low standards:blueCry:

And then their favorite thing to say when you point out all the issues is:
"but its an old car":argh::bangdesk::dark-mood::floggin:

Rust on the inner side of engine bay. And it does have an oil leak as well ... Starter is also starting to go. And I loved the small steering wheel on the radio to replace the original radio knob that presumably got lost

The guy knows the issues. Just played like he didn't when I pointed it out to him. He was a little reluctant to move it from the basement into the sun for me

Yeah noticed the gap in service and the mileage

Good luck with finding a clean one. My father had a red German spec e36 m3 with black interior when I was a kid which he eventually sold as he wasn't using it as often as he should have.Ever since then it has been my favourite M3 to date.

The problem with that is I'm opening myself up to people offering what my max ask might be. And it has already happened based on what this black ones price is

I think the fair and right way is if someone comes across a minter ... And I like it ... Then commercials can be discussed . I've always worked this way. If a guy tells me r1million I will be no thanks . I want one but I'm gonna be sensible
