My new project or bad can of worms?

Hi all

So i had the car for 2 yrs now. Got it for a real bargain, i know it had issues but everything can be fixed at a small fortune hahahahaha. So we started off with a slipping clutch, bought a new clutch kit(sachs kit) send the car to a place thats doing this for a living. 2 weeks later car still not done had a big throwing of toys . Well that got the car right of finished because it wasn't right. The moment they swing the engine everything just came to one solid stop, doesn't want to crank or turn with a spanner.Turns out they have put the clutch plate wrong way around (believe it or not) long story short they cut the box to pieces raped my new clutch plate with some rebond crap and welded box together with aluminium checker plate WTF!!!!!!!
img00402-20120617-1320_3951035505.jpg
Then there is a noise all of a sudden the moment the car is in neutral en your foot is not on the clutch its like a rumbling somewhere in the gearbox. When you have your foot on the clutch pedal its running smooth and soft like a new m3. Still need to get the gearbox sorted any ideas where to take it??

The next thing was the power steering pump and rack. The power steering pump was only connected with 1 bolt to the bracket. the pump itself was also on its way out all internal parts sticking and locking with times. The steering rack had to be replaced as it was also floating like the titanic over the road. Took the car for wheel alignment to have a look at what else is wrong under the car. There was this weird clapping noise left rear when going over bumps or poor roads, after a lot of alignments saw that the left rear trailing arm bush was no more.

Had to do all 4 wheel bearings and discs while busy at the back replaced the trailing arm bushes and shocks, while doing the front shocks also replaced the shock mounting think i have made a boo boo on that one. Back to the wheel alignment again another issue left front lower control arm bend , got new one and replaced it.

The windows was not working left side didn't even had a window mechanism in. Phoned around and got one with new window switches.Made a plan to keep the door panels in place for time being, will get clips when we start putting everything together. Left door handle was also broken replaced that as well. Sunroof next step it slides but it was stuck in tilt mode. This was not an easy thing to fix 3 youtube videos and almost 2 days and 2 trips to the stealers for new slides and clips. While the sunroof was out i had the the head liner recovered with all the post front and back.

Next step was to send the seats in for new leather. think the previous owners left the door open for the dogs. Black Vader seats totally messed up unfortunately i dont have pics of how it looked.

seats in the process of refurbishment will take a pic of the complete happy ending in the morning.

Made a call and send the car to my cousin. He is very good at panel beating and spay painting and replacing panels(more on that later). So the past month we were busy striping the car from front to back and o boy i can tell all of you i have seen better before. But i am also not giving up ive always wanted one and im not giving up now.

Will make more updates over the weekend with more photos of the car being stripped.

:skit: wow this story scares me, firstly those experts should be shot.
you have a big project on your hands but not an impossible feat.

Good luck on the rebuild. :coolShake:

The noise from the gearbox that disappears when you press the clutch sounds typical of a thrust bearing on its way out.

Since the "experts" that did the clutch replacement did such a marvelous job, i would be inclined to suspect that the old thrust bearing was never replaced.

All the best with the rebuild

Hi all

Thanx for all the good lucks, i will indeed need it hahahaha. What we wont do to have a nice neat car.

It was my own fault they raped the car, i didnt have time to do it i was busy with my e30 325i at that time. Well if you pay some one money to fix things you dont need to beg him to do some nice work?? you are paying him at the end of the day. If i go true a1exander post all the time and effort attention to detail, why are people like that so scares?

When the clutch kit was replaced the release bearing was also swapped for a new
one. Last weekend we took the motor and gearbox out, first thing i did was to go straight for the release bearing but it spins quite and doesn't look or feel sticky.

A1exander the 2 cars looks exactly the same look at the engine pic

note the cable ties holding the radiator, the oil cooler is also fixed on the same way. Also in need of the "cowley" and intake plastic over radiator. The bonnet lining is also missing in action wires just hanging loose from the bonnet.

On a better note this is my e30 325 running a turbo and stroked 2.8 bottem end. Will upload fotos of the motor when i can get it of my phone hahaha

Had both seats recovered in new leather and they also fixed the sponge for me. It all went so fast dint even had time to snap a pic of the old seats. Really cant think that someone would neglect sumthing like that

At the moment the car is at this stage

When i removed the carpets it was a mess, the floor board is badly rusted. under neath the heater box also big rust patches

It looks like they tried fixing some stuff before but that oak must not touch a vehicle in the future again. Some random galvanizing plate just tag welded here and there with sealer all over it WTF!!!

The plan is to remove all areas that's been affected and replacing it with new plate. I almost crap my pants but luckily my cousin is the fixer and im just the helper.

The amount of body filler that people use is scary as hell, they are just placing it on as if they are plastering a wall.

Ive also noticed another issue still scratching head about that one. The left rear shock tower on top got some really bad bird poopoo welding on, looks like it teared out at some stage. Just had a look now i don't have a close up photo of that, will get one when im there again.

The list is rather long of what to get and what to do and there is still allot of surprises coming to light. But all in good time Rome wasn't build in one day
I hope to get the M3 back in one piece when im done with it one day, there is allot of wiring and neatening up to do.

On a better note this is my 325 motor.

i wish you all the best.
you will need it.

a project like that can only be done if you have alot of time and money.
or should i say just lots of money........

just keeping my M3 "clean" over the last 6 years has cost me 110k over and above what i purchased the car for.

hi all so its been a while. work is keeping me very busy, as we went for our December break i bumped into a complete body just in need of motor and gearbox with some odds and end short here and there. The bonnet and roof did suffer a bit of hail damage. so i will need some time to fix that but all in good time. So after a heavy arm twisting with my second half i went to have a look and decided im going to take it. loaded it on the trailer and off we went.

Now for the big transplant and getting everything into the new shell. replaced the fugly head lights with the old ones from my yellow car and the tail lights was also replaced with clear bmw lights(thanks gizmo). i then also added a small thin black boot spoiler just for finishing touches at the back.

it was alot of work to get that big motor in that small space:skit: especially when you are working alone.cleaned the intake plenum up to the aluminium and gave it a fresh coat of paint. same with the cover that go's over the coil packs still need to do the tappet cover. must say took bit longer than i thought but i had only 1 to 2 weekends a month available to do this.

got the car running and washed it to take it for drive. must say feels good to drive a car that is steady and solid on the road. never had that experience withe the yellow one. now its clearance and data dot time.
