Please for the love of God, don't go facelift e46 318i. It will be a mistake that you will constantly regret as it will cost you 10x more in parts and fuel than its 6cylinder counterpart. Any 6cyl e46 is better than the 4cyl model in every way.

Really? I thought the 4Cyl is better on fuel...

And Im getting it from someone i know so very good price...

Or should i rather leave the whole buy? Is it that bad?

The 318 has 150k on clock with service history...

Leave it and get a 320/323/325/328 or 330i as the M54 engines (6cyl) is far more reliable than the N42 (4cyl). They will return better fuel consumption as they have alot more usable torque through the rev range so you don't have to rev the crap out of it to get going, that is where you will save on petrol.
The 318i is way underpowered for the heavy 3 series body so you have to floor it all the time to get anywhere...Not so with a 6cyl motor.

There is a reason why there are so many 318i's for sale, nobody wants them.
If you are hell bent on buying an underpowered e46 then go for the 318i prefacelift as it has the very reliable M43 engine which doesn't have VVT or vanos.
The N42 was the first of the VVT engines and they constantly give problems and are terrible motors to work on, they also cost alot more to fix compared to the M54.

^^^What he said.
Having owned an E46 F/L 318i with N42 motor, that thing was only a pleasure while under motorplan. Thereafter it was just endless troubles and bank breaking bills. Did myself a favour when I wrote it off :fencelook:

We have a N42 318ti in the family. Fun little car, but man it has such bad oil leaks. I would rather go for the 323/325i with 6 cylinder. No problems with that engine and much more usable torque. Got great mileage out of my 323i.

Good luck and enjoy the car.
