Motorist pulled over for ‘disappearing’ number plates in SA

A new video has emerged showing a motorist being pulled over in South Africa for having a device which hides his registration plates.

All vehicles are required to have two number plates – one at the back and one at the front.

There are numerous ways to avoid being picked up by a speed camera – reflective spray, laser jammers or flipped plates being some.

However, South African law states that it is illegal to obscure a vehicle’s number plate (with only temporary obstructions like bicycle racks allowed), and traffic officials have warned that using reflective spray or other measures could lead to charges of defeating the ends of justice.

A report by Carte Blanche estimated that as many as 1 in 5 vehicle number plates in Gauteng are cloned -with over 350 variations of legal plates allowed in South Africa.

Metro Police pointed to a rise in illegal plates due to the implementation of e-tolls in Gauteng, in December 2013, a highly unpopular system among motorists.

The video posted to Youtube on Tuesday, shows a shutter type device on a BMW vehicle with Gauteng registration plates. The device is fitted to both plates – front and back.

This had to have been fitted to a BMW :smashScreen:

:withStu: , now I understand why every day I get pulled over when I get into Pretoria from the N14. I have started wondering if the idiot metro has short memory BUT now I understand.

It's because of morons like this that we (BMW owners) get penalized :RedNo:

OK, so this is a bit of an issue for those who get pulled over often during road blocks, for me that will be N1 South approaching Grasmere toll plaza..... pay on the spot traffic offences :smashScreen:

I have noticed an massive increase in the number of number plates with weird fonts. I'm pretty sure its illegal, but the police don't seem to care...

A better mod would be the plate flipper with fake plates on the other side instead of this one that blacks it out, so you always have plates and therefore don't look suspect...

No such thing in South Africa.

Perhaps you mean the other 'on the spot fine' :hammerhead:

You've never had you're driver's license taken at a roadblock for scanning, and the kind Metro chap returns with a list of "you owe us this cash"?

Seen that video on Facebook, stupid idea. Rather just have the plates on with Velcro and remove them when you're parked.

There's a Charged E46 on here that looks like it has this same setup up front.

That was removed.

thats good. the problem with these holders is its too thick since the plate has to be enclosed into the holder, so sticks out a lot and so dam ugly.... i've owned this same device back in 2010 so i know it well. Wasn't worth the drama if caught so i ended up getting rid of it.
