Mercedes in the lead, as BMW falls to third position

Looks like the S-Class is still outselling the 7 series (new one), 2-1. I'd take an S-Class any day too.

BMW lost ground in the luxury-car sales race in January, dropping to third place behind Audi, as Mercedes-Benz stayed in front.

Global deliveries of BMW’s namesake brand rose 7.5% in January to 133,883 cars, lagging behind Mercedes’s 20% leap to 150,814 cars. While Audi had the slowest growth of the world’s three biggest upscale car brands, with sales rising 4%, the Volkswagen unit still outsold BMW with 143,150 vehicles.

The sales data shows the shifting fortunes of the top luxury-vehicle companies. Daimler’s Mercedes, a laggard for a number of years, is passing competitors after overhauling its line-up. All-new models and a renewed offering of popular and lucrative sport utility vehicles such as the GLE are also helping the brand sidestep a general slowdown in China, the biggest car market. Meanwhile, BMW’s growth has trailed its competitor’s, even as the company added the likes of the revamped 7-Series sedan to its line-up.

"Despite many markets showing continuing volatility, we remain optimistic," Ian Robertson, BMW’s head of sales, said on Wednesday.

Sales of BMW’s flagship 7-Series, in showrooms since October, reached 3,392 vehicles last month, less than half the 8,473 deliveries for the competing S-Class. The Mercedes sedan has been on the market in its current iteration for about three years, though the sales figures include the newer coupe and ultra-luxury Maybach versions as well.

The slow ramp-up for BMW’s top-of-the-line vehicle, which featured a much-vaunted gesture-control function, shows the Bavarian company’s struggle to come up with fresh ideas after years of leading the competition with rugged SUVs and expanding into new segments. Recent line-up additions include two van-like models, the 2-Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer, that sit awkwardly with the brand’s sporty image.

The company, which turns 100 years old in March, has kept a low profile since Harald Krueger took over as CEO last May. Mr Krueger is scheduled to present the results of a strategic review next month.

"During the year of the jubilee, Mr Krueger will want to try show excellent results," said Frank Schwope, a Hanover-based analyst with NordLB.

The change in momentum may see BMW lose its sales crown this year, according to forecaster IHS Automotive. The carmaker is yielding ground to Mercedes in China and introducing comparatively few new models.

BMW’s January deliveries in China rose 8.4% to 43,441 vehicles, compared with a 52% gain to 42,671 cars for Mercedes.

So if the number of cars sold determines quality, we should all be driving VW Polo's....

Don't know hey, maybe the brand became a little too "grown up" and boring? Maybe we're missing cars like the first Mcoupe, the 36/46 M3, 850, 333i, etc...cars that makes you want to associate with the brand....maybe Mercedes are getting less boring with their aswome sounding V8's....We've been losing to merc in a straight line since the C63 got introduced....so we don't live on the nurburgring and maybe it don't matter if the //M cars are faster there. All these useless new models, like 3 and 5 series Gt, 4 series....who's idea was it to change the //M3 to // M4 anyways. Anyways...its not like am contributing to bmw sales either. :tiptoe:

Dont tell anyone this yet, dont think people are ready to hear this... Honestly, the moment people start quoting Ring times to prove how good a car is, i switch off.

What is your point exactly?

I think you are half right. Mercedes is doing what they have always done: make an excellent executive saloon (s-class), and then they added the dash of crazy with their AMG division (6.3 litre turbo, IN A COMPACT SPORTS SALOON?!?!?! YES PLEASE!).

Meanwhile, BMW has stopped doing what they always did: make some of the worlds best handling / driver involved cars. And then they added a stupid numbering system.

Here is another perspective

You see Merc and Audi have clever marketing, base price is low and only after you put add ons you get nailed. BMW on the other hand (and it is a good thing) don't charge for cigarette lighter for example. On Audi you pay for things you expect to be there!!!

the 3 series is doing well (its taken over from the gti in cape town) but i would take the mercedes c200 AMG CVT over the 320i M sport. i would take the E over 5 series. the 6 gran coupe is amazing!! but the 7 has always been overshadowed by the S. i also think there are too many models ... the issues that they have don't help! the valve stem seals, bearings, turbos now. i know this is for other models but doesn't help the brand as a whole. & the cars holding their value always used to be an issue. (A8, 7 vs Merc S)

What was the point of your original post exactly?

I don't have to have a point to post anything... If you don't like it, don't read. Just keep it moving.

Why don't some people ever UNDERSTAND this simple point. SMH!

I think Merc is making cars that make the less technically inclined person feel good.

Like Xack said, the AMG burble is barbaric and amazing. Look at the C63 now... A turbo V8 that still sounds amazing. BMW's current turbo's are lacking in sound and that emotive feel.

I too don't care for Nurburgring times... Robot to robot is all that matters. Merc isn't afraid to go crazy.

Cars like the 3 and 5 series GT's are monumental flops, but BMW will keep them on. Resources they could allocate elsewhere.

Meant Technical = Dynamics, Handling etc. Not less technology inclined.

I'd agree with that regarding Audi, but not Merc.
I'd say Merc probably gives you the most standard features.
With the C63, basically everything on the car was standard. The only real options was DVD player, rear camera, Performance Pack, and the 19" wheels.
BMW on the other hand.... You had to pay extra to get a God damn M button on an M3!!!!!!!!

I dunno but this new 7 is on the level of the E38.

Sure when it came out the S class of the time was also 'the best' but look how we regard that car in today's times....a timeless classic, whereas that Merc nobody wants to be caught dead in.

It gonna be the same for this one. Definitely the most gorgeous 7 yet IMO

Oh & straight line speed is for those that cant drive. I dont get joy anymore in putting my foot down & passing coz my car came better equipped from the factory. To outdrive somebody with clearly a more powerful car is so much more satisfying.
