The Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC is powered by a Normal V8 engine that displaces 5549.00 cc. It produces 238.00 BHP at 4800.00 RPM and 287.00 Ft-Lbs at 3500.00 RPM. There is a 4 speed Automatic transmission. The 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC measures 72.00 inches in width, 199.20 inches in length, and has a wheelbase of 112.20 inches.

At the time of their launch, the 560 SEC and 560 SEL with this engine were the most powerful Mercedes-Benz production cars built until then.

I was fortunate enough to get to work on this beauty having detailed the owners equally magnificent Porsche 928GT a few weeks ago.

I arrived at the house early, looking forward to cracking on with this voluminous beauty.

On arrival the car was parked in the garage, after pulling her out and sort of staring the largeness of the car I started with a good wash.

The wash began with pre-soaking the mag wheels in the strongest detergent I had due to quite a bit of tar buildup. The mags were then agitated with various brushes followed by the arches and tyre sidewalls.

The car was then foamed with Maxi Suds and allowed to dwell for 10 minutes whilst I cleaned the badges, weather strips, rubbers and panel gaps with further degreaser and brushes.

After being hosed down with a high pressure hose, I hand washed and after hosing down dried the car with a microfibre cloth.

Already looking much better I decided to re-inspect the car for defects, contamination and possible respray work.

Because of the cars colour and the harsh sunlight I have dimmed a few of the following pictures to better show the defects on the paintwork:

SAM_0227.jpg

As you can see the paintwork, although stunning was lacking a lot of shine, depth and clarity with a faint swirling and Hologramming as a result. This was evident throughout the paintwork but more noticeable on the bonnet, bootlid and front fenders (No doubt caused by people leaning over them to dry the huge bonnet).

I continued to pull the car inside and begin with the polishing:

SAM_0238.jpg

The polish for the day was Chemical Guys Pro Polish, doing two passes per panel using a medium cut pad with minimal pressure.

This immediately returned a huge amount of gloss onto the paintwork and as you will further into the detail the clarity was fantastic.

Here is a quick 50/50 with the left being before and right after correction:

SAM_0256.jpg

Crystal clear paintwork, with lovely depth and gloss. I could not ask for more!

The car outside being inspected under direct sunlight after the bonnet was completed:

Throughout my details I am often accosted with various Wildlife, I have no idea why or where from but I suspect it has to do with the smell and contents of the waxes and products I use.

SAM_0268.jpg

Okay the bird was just wondering about making a noise...

SAM_0275.jpg

Bootlid corrected and looking silky smooth:

SAM_0283.jpg

With the polishing completed it was time for the car to be re-washed. The reason for this is that the polish leaves oils and residues on the paintwork which affects the wax when it is applied. Another reason is that when polishing the polish causes a lot of dusting putting a fine layer of dust in all the panel gaps, rubbers etc. Once spray and all of this falls right off the car.

SAM_0289.jpg

Like the Porsche the wax of choice is Collonite 746, a wax with a once year warranty from the manufacturer. Two coats were applied to the car and buffed off straight away leaving a beautiful finish.

Although meant to be a picture of a little 2cm spider I loved the paintwork captured. Notice the clarity I was referring to? You can see each and every metallic flake.

With time running out I set to work on the finer details of the car.

Trim was dressed, arches and engine bay were dressed and the exahusts were polished to a splendor with Megs NXT Metal Polish. The glass was brought to a shine with Autoglym Fast Glass and the interior was vacuumed and leather treated with Smart Leather Conditioner and cleaner.

Mag wheels were coated with Rim Wax, plastics treated and seatbelts fastened in the back. All wiper blades, door handles and chrome bits were cleaned, polished and protected with wax.

The results were simply fantastic with me pulling the car out as the owner arrived home. Here we are:

Considering the size of this car I thoroughly enjoyed this detail. The owners nanny was exceptional bringing me lunch as well as coffee and hot chocolate throughout the day.

The owner of the car, was even more chuffed and I am glad I was able to restore the shine to this stunning car.

Thank you for reading and all comments are welcome.

Impressive seeing this car in good nick. I really love them and it saddens me to see how most people (except for this guy, of course) treats them ... 90's SL aside, a SEC would be the only other Merc in my dream garage.

Thanks for the pics Mike - really is eye candy

Can the Collonite Wax be bought directly from the shelves? If yes where can I get it from? :inlove:

Thank you everyone for the awesome feedback!

You can get it from Crazy Detailer, they are based in JHB and its about R340 for a tin.

There is a smaller tin which is closer to R500 which gives even more gloss etc but not as much durability. I also have that one and I find its easier to work with.

Once again, thanks for the comments - Now when am I going to detail a BMW for you guys?

Who wants their BMW pampered? :inlove:

Nice work. The 560SEC churned out 220KW in this country, because we didn't have the stupid American emissions equipment. Fantastically powerful, fantastically swift thing, and a car I'll definitely have in my garage one day.
